All the hand wringing over technique is a little silly. Let law enforcement decide what works and what doesn't and let them not have to worry about our tender little sensibilities.

I think its fairly well established that "truth drugs" don't work. Torture doesn't work either - except as a means to get people to sign staged confessions to promote pre-meditated agendas.

As far as sensibilities go I would imagine that getting useful information to further an investigation is more useful than simply assuming the conclusions and going through the motions. That line of reasoning is what got us into Iraq.

All I'm saying is, let law enforcement/intel/military agencies figure out what works and doesn't. If something works, I've got no problem with it. If something doesn't work, I've got a problem with it but only because it doesn't work.

Sure. But whether it works depends very much on what the objective was to begin with.

As I say forced confessions are not untypical with this sort of approach. If that's the goal - then it works marvellously.

And you base this on what personal experience?

Has anyone here tortured another human being to extract information? Please speak now.

I read a lot and there's no shortage of information in the public domain (try Amnesty International).

If you want me to say that I'm not an authority on the subject - you would be right. Perhaps I'm wrong.

I can only state the following: in my previous employment with the USG, I was privy to and saw first hand, "eye opening" experiences. I will leave it at that.

What's the bet India does not have idiots crying about the Patriot Act. Then again not too many nations do. Yes even those nations who enacted similar measures as a precaution yet were not attacked.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

If you want to live in a country where its routine to beat someone half to death in custody and pull out their fingernails to obtain a forced confession - and subsequently hang them in a sports stadium you might want to consider moving to one of those high-quality of life, freedom loving countries like Libya, Iran or Saudi Arabia where such things are commonplace.

What do you suggest, pamper the guy with the finest food and wine? Let him go? Believe whatever he tells them? Beat him until they get the anwer they want? Investigate whatever information he provides? Damned if they do, damned if they don't.
