Besides checking manually, they use dogs (among other things) to check. And yes - it is a big deal to bring unapproved/illegal contraband (usually confiscated depending on what it is).

Yes they do check I would not risk bringing illegal products in.

Just my thoughts but... I wouldn't imagine they'd be interested in photocopied documents? Unless they had a look in your bag read the documents and decided to take an interest? I never had any problems bringing documents into the US e.g. birth certificates, licenses, certificates of which I had copies including our packet from the K1.. etc. As far as food there are rules as to what is allowed in I didn't have any problems bringing in a lot of chips (prawn cocktail) form back home, chocolate etc. Have a look here this should help you figure out what to bring and what to leave.

If your worried about finding some food from back home once you get to the US I wouldn't worry too much, you can buy just about anything online and have it shipped to your door or buy the bare ingredients here and make it yourself. If your in the right area you might even find a store selling foods your accustomed to. It does take a bit of getting used to the different food over here but it's not bad.

I would agree with the other posters I wouldn't risk bringing in anything on the no list otherwise they most likely will find it and take it from you. Every time I've been through customs they have searched through my bags and asked what I was bringing in. They have also xrayed my bags when it had food items in it. I expect they carry out other checks as your bag makes it way from the plane to the airport conveyor before you get to see it.

Good luck
