Stash for the afterlife: A photograph of a stash of cannabis found in the 2,700-year-old grave of a man in the Gobi Desert. Scientists are unsure if the marijuana was grown for more spiritual or medical purposes, but it's evident that the man was buried with a lot of it.

Nearly two pounds of still-green plant material found in a 2,700-year-old grave in the Gobi Desert has just been identified as the world's oldest marijuana stash, according to a paper in the latest issue of the Journal of Experimental Botany.A barrage of tests proves the marijuana possessed potent psychoactive properties and casts doubt on the theory that the ancients only grew the plant for hemp in order to make clothing, rope and other objects.

I'm thinking the next news story we hear about this will be something like,

"Kosovo man from Maryland attempts to steal 2700 year old weed.

He may have gotten away with it, but instead of leaving after the theft,

the man decided to have a smoke and start chatting on an internet forum".

Correct me if I am wrong (which happens often, I admit!) but isn't hemp differnt from cannabis? Hemp is the fiberous plant that is good for rope, paper (like the constitution is written on), cloth (itchy stuff) etc., and cannabis is a cousin/weed that is smoked, cooked and so on.??

So the statement "casts doubt on the theory that the ancients only grew the plant for hemp in order to make clothing, rope and other objects." would be?????

I think that marijuana and hemp are each types of cannabis plants.

I always thought hemp was the male plant and since the article states that they "weeded" out the male plants it was called cannibis.

I call BS. Baggies weren't invented 2700 years ago.

It wasn't found in a baggie, it was found pounded in a wooden bowl per the article. I think that picture is just there for display since, obviously that baggie doesn't weigh a pound.
