Once you hire a lawyer you really lose control over the process. You have to go through that person for everything and often times once you pay their fee they suddenly dont see the importance in returning phone calls or emails. The guides on this site are excellent. VJ'rs will assist you. If you make a mistake you will get an RFE (request for evidence). Respond to the RFE promptly and it wont delay your case much if at all. When you hire a lawyer then a paralegal will likely be doing your paperwork and they really aren't concerned with timely processing of your case. Ever been to the DMV, you get the picture.

I used the free guide here on VJ and saved all that extra cost

the way i look at it is, the lawyer has to get all the information to fill out on the forms from you anyway and he is just a likely to make a mistake as you, or maybe more so because he will not realize he put down something wrong, plus you will spend time going back and getting papers to them and if you do get a RFE it goes through the lawyer first so it can take longer to get the information back to USCIS. We fill out everything ourself and had no problems and the others are correct it does not get done any faster using a lawyer once its at the service center it gets put in a box and awaits its turn for a worker to start working the cases in that box. Fedex and DHL are reliable so sending that way from the Philippines is ok, just a little expensive. I have no faith in the Philippines post office, they cant even deliever a letter. I have mailed 14 letters in the last few months 3 were deleivered. Good Luck how every you decide to processed.

I hired a lawyer and, while he is great, fast and there have been no problems, had I known about Visa Journey before I hired him I would've done it myself. I had no idea there were such great resources out there...I just assumed that if you wanted it done correctly you would have to hire a lawyer. I would say do it yourself. If you get stumped there are TONS of people here that will answer your questions and help you through the process.

I agree. Lawyers can also make mistakes though they claim expertise. We paid our lawyer $6,500.00 (exlusive of the fees to USCIS and NVC)

That is crazy right there.

Accually lawyers slow the process down as had been said several times in this thread. Even if you have a RFE doing it yourself, it will still be faster then a attny.

Got to love the fact my wife was preggy and even with a RFE @ NVC she was still here in under 5 months!
