Capsule Inn Akihabara, Tokyo

Capsule Inn Akihabara is one of only a few places to stay in "Electric Town," Tokyo's anime/otaku hub and the site of the largest electronics market in the world. The tiny capsule rooms look like washing machines from the outside.

Geek factor: The hotel's sleeping units are "designed in the image of a jet airplane's cockpit" with every device in the capsule — TV, radio, alarm clock, lighting — designed to be controlled from a sleeping position.

Yeah but the building the hotel is in must really be shielded for street noise because I can guarantee that Akihabara is one noisy area of Tokyo.

With that said I'd prefer more normal accommodations.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

HAL does not need accommodations, does he?

HAL 9000 clarifies that he does possess physical parts he controls with its AI. At any given moment in can be as inconspicuous as a car's GPS device to something the size of a starship.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Dear Len,

HAL 9000 is mainly an Artificial Intelligence. AI. More than just a programmable toaster oven.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

i've seen that hotel before on tv. has anyone seen the tiny apartments in tokyo where it's basically just a small room where everything folds away?

this also reminds me of one i saw in london...

apartment11.jpg

A FORMER storage cupboard is being let in London for £135 a week, it emerged today.

Measuring just 62 square feet, the converted cupboard could well be the smallest flat in the capital.

Its living space is just 7ft 6in by 3ft 4in - into which a kitchenette, shower room and wardrobe space have been squeezed.

The bed is on a raised platform measuring just 7ft 6in by 3ft and is reached using a ladder.

After visiting the website for the Capsule Inn Hotel, I think the idea behind this is for quick stop-overs and if someone needs a place to rest quick. It's not intended as a vacation-style hotel and isn't mean for long-term use.

Honestly, I can see how this would be a good thing. Since many people in Japan use public transportation, it's entirely possible those who work late or have been out partying would have missed their bus or train home. That's where this hotel comes in. It allows someone to stay overnight (or potentially however long they wish) at reduced rates and some extras added.

I wish most cities had something like this. If someone lacks any family or friends nearby and there's no way home, what're they going to do? Sleep at the office? The street? Find a homeless shelter? Seriously, this might keep some people from getting into trouble or worse yet, getting others into trouble.
