folks,

my wife is scheduled to appear for IV interview in January'09 at Chennai Consulate in India.

I am the USC petitioner planning on accompanying her for the Interview. Do you guys know if I would be allowed into the consulate past the security to go along with her? I have heard that if you carry your US passport they let you in. But I've also heard that none other than the beneficiary(ies) are allowed inside.

Any experiences to share?

TIA.

I recently had my interview in Mumbai consulate and my USC husband wasn't allowed to enter.

Before the interview, I did email Mumbai consulate asking if my husband can join me for the interview or not and they did reply with a Positive answer but on the day of the interview, guards didn't allow him to get inside, even after us showing the Print out of that email, they said if my husband will be needed he will be called.

Anyways just go there and be prepared to wait outside.

Thank you all for the responses. So I had emailed Chennai consulate yesterday and got a response today that I would be allowed into the consulate if I brought along my original US passport.

Certainly looks like things happen randomly there however. The big issue is one prepares to travel all the way from US but he/she is not certain of the outcome despite being a US citizen and being told you are welcomed... oh well, one has to take chances I guess.

thanks again!

They cannot stop a USC from entering the Consulate. The CO can, however, decide against having the USC present at the counter during the interview but by then they already know you are there and that helps a lot. Just being there in the waiting area is a big help just in case something goes wrong coz as the USC you can demand answers and they have to answer unlike your wife whose questions or queries will not be entertained. I speak from personal experience. All the best
