We're just wondering as my husband makes good money in the US and I do well here in Canada... we haven't even begun our Visa journey in earnest as we're waiting for our marriage cert first before we can even file. We just got married a couple of weeks ago.

I thought I had this figured out, but he's filing t here, I'm his wife, does he claim me? Do I claim him? If so, do either/both of us pay taxes on the others income? How will we be penalized? If at all and god... this needs to be easier. He's freaking out as he thinks that if we pick the married box on our respective tax forms, we'll have to be responsible for our own income plus our spouses...

Any help will be appreciated. If we claim each other, are there advantages? We both have very good incomes so... it's not like one of us isn't a wage earner, we both are and we're in the upper levels of wage earning so...

TMI?

I just need some help if you all don't mind.

how does everyone else in our situation do it? What's the best way? Any help would be appreciated. PM me if you see fit.

I am not sure about Canada

Just a question..is there a reason you like to post here so much? Just asking.

I could be wrong because I'm not a tax expert, but I'm sure you have to say you are married, but do not have to claim one another. If you don't make any income in the US and don't live there, how can you have taxable income?

I'm not sure though. Someone on here will be!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

I am a CPA so I understand the US side of it

What does you being a CPA have to do with posting in the Canadian form all the time? I'm not Canadian-biased or anything, just interested in knowing why you post in a lot of our threads especially when it's a Canadian issue.

did not realize this was a closed group...

If you are unaware, there is a US side of this issue.... but excuse me for trying to be of assistance...

YMMV

Why are you being so defensive? It is not a closed group, notice how I said I'm not Canadian-biased. There are people who post here often that aren't Canadian. You just seem to post here an awful lot.

I'm not "unaware" there is a US side of this issue..are you all of a sudden a US expert on things? Just because you are a CPA, how does that make you an expert on the US side of immigration?

Any ways, not to put this topic off topic so...please someone answer this fine lady's tax question.

you post in a lot of our threads especially when it's a Canadian issue.

taxation is a cross border issue not solely immigration or Canadian. I have seen too many people handle the US taxation side in the transition year wrong.

Hi all...

Thanks for your help, regardless of where you're from, you might be all the wiser in terms of situations.

Sorry for any duplicate postings I might make. Just trying to be well informed as to what the tax year hholds. I also don't want

anything tax related to hold up our pending immigration stuff. ie, want to do everything by the books as best we can.

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to answer and good luck to you all.
