I heard there was some error in calculating the number of the devil and it's 612 or something. It had something to do with numerology and the lack of perfection in nature. Anyway, let them pray, but hope that they don't take themselves too seriously. Any good evangelical Christian knows that superstition is a sign of succumbing to the temptation of the devil. ;)

well I guess I'd be considered an evangelical Christian, which just means I think a Christian should share what they believe... it doesn't only have to be words though, actions speak louder. People don't like stereotyping but there is a huge stereotype about evangelical Christians. They make "evangelical" into a bad word, but evangelical just means:

1 : of, relating to, or being in agreement with the Christian gospel especially as it is presented in the four Gospels

2 : PROTESTANT

3 : emphasizing salvation by faith in the atoning death of Jesus Christ through personal conversion, the authority of Scripture, and the importance of preaching as contrasted with ritual

I'm just tired of the media making evangelical a bad word and people stereotyping. But I don't expect it to change. I have never called myself an evangelical, but I guess I am one by the definitions above from webster.com. I'm fine with that. I know you weren't referring to me that way, but still I don't think it's right since I am a Christian and you are stereotyping. (yeah Christians shouldn't believe in or worry about superstitions, because of what the bible says...but the "any good evangelical Christian knows...etc" comment was saracastic in tone, no? so what if its true?)

Stina, I wasn't referring to you and I wasn't being sarcastic either. What I was trying to get at is that one of the major motivations for the Reformation and thus the beginnings of the evangelical/protestant churches was the fact that the Catholic church was feeding people all these superstitions. Being protestant meant being enlightened because one followed what the bible said rather than what some quack tried to sell as the truth.

Sorry, that's not fact. Catholics don't belive in superstition, nor does the church fear the number 666.

The Reformation was in the 16th century; I was referring to the past indicated by the use of past tense...

I think that would be debatable. There is a lot in history to consider. I think the selling of indulgences would be an example in itself, telling ppl they could buy their relatives into heaven when they just invented it to make money. There has been massive accounts of corruption in the Catholic church in history. Not to say that's how it still is, I am not anti-catholic but we can't ignore the past and say they "never" did those kinds of things.

Exactly. The Catholic church admits to having in the past relied on superstitions as well as on impossible wonders. Why do you think St. Christopher is not a saint anymore? What do you think the whole business with relics was about? As Stina correctly points out, the selling of indulgences falls into the same category as do the massive campaigns against Jews and Muslims and other non-believers.

Also, whether or not the Catholic church ever actively promoted superstition was not my point, but rather the fact that the great schism was the result of people like Luther and Calvin claiming that the Catholic church relied on superstition to control the masses.

Absolutely! Hehehehe

Now, is it just me or does the idea of 'violent worship' sound distinctly un-Christian?

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
