I run a Catholic lay charity and we sponsor a Food and Toy Drive every year for Christmas. We used to adopt families, but we ended up having families in our own school community and it was uncomfortable for some of the kids. Now it's entirely anonymous. We provide food and toys for about 6 parishes in our area.

My kids and I usually pick an ornament or two from the "giving tree" at our church in lieu of adopting a family.

No matter how much we feel we may not have, my kids and I have always felt blessed because we know we are better off than many.

I sponsor an 8-year-old boy named Julio from Peru who lives in a very impoverished area, through a very highly regarded and reputable charity, by donating $30/month to him and his grandparents, who raise him. Erika and I are going to get to meet him while I'm down there during Christmas. I picked him because he has the same birthday as me :D

At my old job our floor would sponsor a family for Christmas. The director's best friend as a social worker so she would have lists of families in need.

The social worker would get the ages, size of clothing, favorite colors, like dislikes of the family and children. The social worker would then drop off the wish-list, as well as list of necessities for the family. Several boxes with lists of items would be on each box, and you could sign up for whatever you wanted to provide. It was a really great idea.

To ensure that they would get a nice Christmas meal if they wanted someone gave a $200 gift card to Safeway.

Last year was a single mom with 4 kids ranging in age for 5-17. The family got things from coats and jackets for the kids, board games, digital camera, barbies. It was pretty amazing to see how generously everyone gave.

The social worker came one afternoon on the 23rd, picked everything up and was on her way to the mother's house.

This year I think it'll be just a simple donation to Toys for Tots.
