We landed at 1030pm; by the time we got off the plane and were on the line, it was 10:45pm (on a sunday night); the first officer took about 10 minutes processing the paperwork, and then we were sent to another office where there were 2 guys at a desk; one was busy, and the other one was talking to some other officer walking thru; the non busy guy took our papers and it took him about 12 min to do all his motions and we then were out of there. Now, when we arrived, we were sitting on the front of the plane, and when we got to the line, we were like the first ones there so waiting didn't take long.

Prior to that trip, i had arrived at JFK on the same flight from europe and i was on the back of the plane and it took me about 30 min to get out of the plane and clear the citizen line......so it all depends on when you arrive, how crowded it is, and honestly, given that I traveled overseas many times, as the previous poster said, 4 hours is a better safe bet for a layover. 2.50 minutes is also fine, but i like to be on the safe side when it comes to flying.....

Anyone else? I need more info have to buy ticket in a couple of hours I'm leaning towards buying it w/ 2hr50min layover

There is not enough information to give you an answer here. Delays are impacted by many factors including time of day, day of the week, and country of origin for the flight. I am not surprised the person who arrived at 10:30 pm on a Sunday made it through quickly. There are very few flights landing at this time in JFK.

I don't think 2.5 hours in between flights is enough time because in many cases processing can take up to 2-3 hours. Again, it all depends on the day and time you get there and how many international flights land at the same time you arrive. So it's best to allow more time, just in case.

well - it took me 1h to get to the IO, just because I was in the back of the plane and 3 international flights arrived at once. from there on it was a piece of cake and I had WAY to much time, but you never know.

if the immigration officer has a bad day, or if one of them is sick, it might take FOREVER. other than that they are really rude in NY.

That's true, we were processed in less than 15 minutes going through MIA but I have heard stories of people getting stuck there for up to 4 hours and missing their connecting flights. It's best not to take any chances.
