I'm not exactly sure what you're asking...but I think I know...it's basically the same reason that only two USCIS offices process K-1s. Only two consulates do K-1 interviews: Montreal and Vancouver. Your interview location is determined by where in Canada the beneficiary lives. Western-ish side=Vancouver, Eastern-ish side=Montreal. I hope I understood your question and answered it well. :)

it was EXACTLY what i was asking- thank you!

i ask because it's going to cost us a lot for this trip (i am going too!) and since ottawa is the capital, it seems like the obvious choice for a consulate. i just wonder why there isn't a consulate in every province to make things easier :) thanks for the quick answer!

I totally understand...my husband lived in Winnipeg when he was still my fiance and we were doing our K-1. It cost more for him to fly to Vancouver for his interview than it cost for him to fly to Salt Lake to see me. I went to Vancouver with him and our interview was simple...they didn't even look at the relationship evidence we had sent weeks gathering and organizing. Literally asked four questions and then approved us...but it could have been so much worse! Definitely make sure you're super organized, the other couples interviewing at the same time were less organized and had much more difficult interviews than we did.

It's a really expensive process overall, we hadn't really considered travel costs at the beginning and then realized "oh hey...there's another $800 to this." It was definitely worth being at the interview with him, though. It helped us have less stress. Also make sure you're prepared for the cost to file AOS once your visa is approved and you're married. That's what we're currently doing. If you have any questions feel free to PM me. :)

i REALLY appreciate your offer. you'll probably hear from me closer to the noa2! :star:

there is a consulate in every major city in Canada but only Vancouver and Montreal handle K1, K3 and Cr1/IR1 interviews...

thanks for the information! you would think places like ottawa and nyc (where i live) would have consulates that handle everything!

They used to do the interviews at all those consulates in Canada, back in the 90's - then decided to have them only at Vancouver/Montreal.

It's silly and I think most people would be happy to pay say a $200 additional fee to do the 10 min interview in say, Calgary, rather than flying all the way to Montreal.

its a money thing and a personnel issue! I'm sure these consulates are not operating at full manning power! We have many friends that work work here at the main State Dept, and they are short! Not enough working bodies, but lots of management types, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Absolutely! Since that would have been less than half cost of the plane ticket to Vancouver, we would definitely have preferred that option.
