What experiences have you had sending large packages to Nigeria thru regular USPS? I know its a risk...since they have a reputation of going thru and even stealing stuff. Sometimes the package never gets to the person at all. I am just curious to hear any feedback from anyone who has recently sent something. My hubby says it depends on where its going and how its packed. He said if you wrap all the items with tape several times...it makes it harder for people to go thru it. Plus if u have it delivered to a business address...it stands a better chance. We have a package we're sending for Xmas...and its approx. $700 FEDEX or $200 USPS! :o My hubby is disgusted with the cost of shipping!!! LOL He's like."we should have just sent the money..it cost twice as much more to ship it than the cost of whats inside..na wah oo!" hahahaha.. I'm like "welcome to America baby"

Anyway...just wondering if anyone has recent experiences to share. I always used FEDEX...except twice I sent him a card...and one got there a month later...the other never go there!

Thanks subbies :)

Hi, I know that my inlaws have a PO Box and we have never had any problems with sending things that way, is there a family member that has a PO Box? My husband thinks that is a safe way to send things.

To Blessed to be stressed:) I realize that all things have a purpose and a time.....have faith and the Lord Almighty will provide... when the time is right, he NEVER fails!

I just sent him a package last week. I was shocked by the price. I sent a few things back in August but they went first class in a large letter size envelope. It did take a month to be delivered. Nothing was opened/damaged. But now I worry about this one b/c of the contents I have inside.

I have never had to fill out a customs form either. I track the package all the time. I did find out 2 days after I mailed the package it left out of the country. I thought that was fast! I called USPS this past weekend & I'm told by a rep for the international packages that it should arrive safe & in one piece. But he said there is always a chance it could be opened. I think he said if something is stolen out of it there is something they can help me with (to find out what happened I think he said).

But I'm worried (a lil) that it may be opened or things taken out. Guess I will see, huh? This package means a lot to me esp. as he does not know (that I included something for the whole family). I made him think it was something just for him and our 12yr old brother. I will keep you updated on what happens. I would like to know if yours is deliv in one piece as well if you don't mind. I could not believe USPS said it will arrive in Naija in 10days (buss I think) but it still may take just as long as the first class envelope took to get delivered. I was thinking as this cost a lot more then first class it would get there faster then a month.

Ones that I know who are going to Africa are going to far away places like Kenya. Another friend is leaving in a week or so but I sent the package before I knew she was going. My fiance works for himself and I did not want to send to his work place. I send the packages to a disclosed location. I could be wrong but I feel that gives us a lot of protection when I send things off to him.

Thanks for the responses. My hubby decided we are gonna take a chance with USPS..He doesnt feel its worth the money to send otherwise. We are having it delivered to his dad's office, so hopefully it arrives intact. I hope it makes it there before Xmas...but I guess as long as it makes it there at all, we will be thankful :)

 I send things often, and so far I've had no problem, but I try not to send things that are too fancey that would be too tempting to steal, they basically have everything there as we have here(believe it or not). I keep my care packages simple (toothpaste, deoderant, cologne, t-shirts, underwear, etc) May as well send it at the cheaper rate because once it leaves th U.S. it can get to the recipient at any given time, no matter how you send it. It is better if your husband tracks the package online then picks it up himself in the post office. It could still get stolen even at a business address. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. Actually my hubby is here in the states already...We were trying to send gifts back to family.

Unfortunately I found out today that the package we were sending is too large to send USPS!!!! They won't even accept it!!!! I can't even believe that!!!! So I guess we will have to divide it into several smaller boxes...and take a greater risk that one or all of them will not make it to the destination or pay the friggin $700 for FEDEX!!! This really pisses me off!

We were waiting on a package from China, same thing 7 days in customs, when my husband finally got a customs agent on the phone(I was amazed!! He is persistant ;) ) the agent told him that things are taking longer to clear because they have a high volume, due to the holidays, there are alot of packages. Good news is, once it was released we got it the next day.

Thanks for the info. Even though I mailed off end of Nov I know they still have a lot of packages going that way. So I guess we will have to wait. I found a web site http://www.customs.gov.ng/ but I don't know if we should call like your husband did or juss wait.
