I was only commenting on wahrania's post.

It's a basic core belief in Islam that the first prophets were muslim. Sure the Quran was established in the 600's but that doesn't mean that the people weren't practicing long before that.

Anyway my point isn't to get into a religion debate, just that it was odd for wahrania to bring up something that Jewish scholars have stated where she herself is muslim. Obviously Jewish scholars are going to favor their religion and Christian scholars will favor their religion. I just think that once you actually state that you are of X-religion you should follow that particular religion's scholarly advice rather than confusing yourself. Just my two cents.

Ditto. That is what I was thinking.

I do not believe in debating religion. No one ever changes their mind. Both sides leave feeling angry.

This thread was NOT about debating religion. It was about talking about religion at family reunions and the workplace and defending it.

If we could get back to topic about talking about religion with other people, it makes sense to keep the thread open.. :ot2:

but only if yr not jewish right?

it seems that it turns out that when a lot of people participating in this thread discuss religion at family reunions, and the workplace, and are defending it, some debate occurs with those discussions. what exactly is it that you are looking for here? you started the hugest debate in here with the ####### you pulled on chaishai and making asinine statements about islam. and now you want people to suck it up and "get back to topic" and ignore the stupid ####### you've posted here? thanks, but no thanks.

I didnt think that the debate about defending Islam would apply to her. I originally stated that I did not want the thread to devolve. I am not continuing to talk to her about anything and I would like to get back on topic. If you do not want to be on topic, then dont be. I have opinions about what happened to jews in the diaspora and the hardships they faced. Most people made aliyah for more than one reason, some of it was wanting to be in Israel , some were facing enormous financial problems and were persecuted. I see the destruction of the Jewish Community in North Africa and feel hard about it. For her mom, memories were very good. I have met others thrown from their houses and in fact only allowed to bring one suitcase and no belongings and lost their houses to local people. She has a different experience within her family. It doesnt negate what happened to others and certainly doesnt apply in her case so its best We dont continue the debate because she doesnt think I am correct and I handled the way I talked to her inappropriately. I no longer am pursuing that line of conversation with her because it was unfair the way I responded. I think because I know what happened in North Africa as far as community destruction and the way that many were forced to leave, when someone points out 700 people remaining and an empty synagogue used as almost a museusm and says Jews are still vibrantly living there, I take offense. What happened to the Jews in Tunisia with deportation to camps and then during the 1967 war was inhumane and genocidal. I will forever be stunned by a vandalised cemetary I saw in North Africa with graves knocked open and tombstones tossed everywhere.. One city went from 100,000 to now population zero. Thats not fair and its true and its ok if I discuss it but it didnt belong in this thread...She and I disagree about things and I am sorry I approached things the way I did

I think its safe to say :ot2:

Links between Islam and Terrorism....hmmmm no never had that talk with my family or my coworkers. Why in the world would they think a religion is to be held responsible for the actions of idiots?

I believe we are very blessed because I never have to defend my choice of religion to anyone. Nor do we discuss these types of topics at dinner or family functions. Typically our dinners and functions are surrounded with fun times and catching up. We are a mixed family of. Jews, Muslims and Christians and we all agree on two things, we love God and each other. We hold a mean Easter Egg hunt, EID celebration and Hannukah parties.

You bring up a good point. With 3 religions in the family, you get every other day as a holiday whoohoo:)

I didnt think that the debate about defending Islam would apply to her.

Why not? Just because she is not Muslim does not mean she cannot comment about discussions that may happen around her dinner table. There are many people, Muslim and not, that do not think that all Muslims are terrorists and probably say so to family and friends.

Just like you have your views, everyone else has their own. You can't disregard what someone may say just because they do not fit your mould of someone qualified to comment.

great point and I shouldnt have said anything like I said. And yes, she could bring a different point of view to her Jewish family because she is interacting with muslims and their husbands

Good point Zee Bee... Its just not where I was originally going with this but yes you make an excellent point

Not to mention that my husbands parents were born in North Africa and he has been the victim of racial profiling. EVERY time we travel internationally and go through customs in the US he gets pulled from myself and his two young sons for an hour because they think he looks like someone suspicious and they cant tell us who! Then they rifle through our bags and then let us go after thinking about whether or not to take our sons kinder egg. So I just cant swallow the whole concept that I am not allowed to participate in the discussion.

You must have very open minded co workers. You must have a very open family. I actually have had ham pushed at me and my daughter and my mom said she would feed my daughter BLTs when I wasnt looking and that ham would be the meat of choice at every family gathering. I wont even go into what co workers have said and done over the last 7 years. Literally I had one boss 4 years ago be violently rude to some shia clients ( black shias) and one had a khimar on and literally he said WHY ARE YOU WORKING WITH THOSSSSSSSE PEOPLE>> YOU ARE WASTING MY OFFICE SPACE..

You are very lucky that you have never had any experiences with people prejudiced against Islam. You are also living in a very metropolitan community. I used to feel that Florida was completely metropolitan but I still get people trying to "save me and my kids" from the muslims all the time.I live in a neighborhood where nearly EVERYONE attends church except for me and the church culture is very strong where I live. Its part of alot of peoples social identity and network. If you regularly attend a masjid, foreign people really try to be nice but they really cannot recreate the closeness of the church network. The churches are really so nice... that after my son died, I heard nothing or next to nothing from the muslims that I knew but several christians that know me and like me brought food over and sent cards... The Americans in my life were amazing and kind..

I was also muslim in the months after 9 11 and I didnt have a spouse to insulate me from what 2002 would bring. At that time , literally everyone was under suspicion with license plates being photographed outside events... there were informers both paid and unpaid running all over the place... visits from big black suvs.. people getting rounded up you name it. The world we live in today is not the world 7 years ago....The US has healed alot but I lived first hand post 911 and its insanity. I am glad you never have had one knock at your door, one visit from someone looking for names and someone else or any other insanity. Many others had...I remember those days.. and lived them..more than one knock.. more than one event.. and yes I saw first hand what happened to previously logical people. You have to remember the hijackers had florida drivers licenses and this place was teaming with all kinds of illegals to the point that they would round them up in trucks and they would just disappear.. We also had one of the largest busts of illegal workers and the poor palestinian guy hiring all the arab illegals would die penniless... after starting from nothing and building a huge golden coral on international drive.. he never sponsored terrorism.. but got caught up in the dragnet because of 9 11.. Lots of people lost everything they had because of the new stops they put up because of the choices of those idiots on those planes. Immigration got ridiculously hard.. and many of us are in ap because of what happened at that time. Everyone used to be able to DCF on the spot.. islamists broke our lives apart because their acts of terror have made it hard for legitamate couples to be together...

I am glad you never experienced a thing.. these days things are much much easier.. They sure as hell werent 7 years ago...

You are and racial profiling would make a really good topic. I had a hard time explaining to my husband why his ticket got red stamps all over it and he had to almost take all his clothes off while clearing security. Racial profiling and racism experienced would be an excellent topic where we could all talk about things experienced... Jewish Muslim

and yes even Christian because they are no longer allowed to even display a bible in many mena countries or risk arrest or immediate deportation because of the anti prostelysing laws... good topic chai

I will consider myself VERY lucky that I have a loving family and my co-workers have the common sense to not say offending things. I work in a professional atmosphere and religion and politics are usually not the topic of the day in my office. We are usually trying to make money and have some fun.

Pushing ham towards a muslim in spite, is just mean and ignorant. Now what does this have to do with terrorism again?

I think pushing pork towards a muslim , having nothing else to eat when muslims are present is emotionally abusive. It sure doesnt rank up there with machine gun fire and lobbing grenades inside a hotel room but when you are trying to be part of a family and people dont respect you or your husbands dietary or religious choices.. it sure IS emotionally abusive.(

I am glad you dont have that and have never experienced it. If you performed all your sales work or interaction with customers or co workers in hijab,, it may be completely another story. I spent a year doing that and OH BOY was that a year to remember. Going on sales calls in hijab was very very very interesting

have you ever worn hijab to work Jackie?

No, but I don't wear hijab anywhere Kat. Not sure if you are trying to make a point or bait for more drama.

I don't hide that I am muslim from anyone. Why should I? My last name is on my business card. When my customers ask about it, I tell them. Why shouldn't I? If they don't want to buy carpet because of my religion, thats their loss not mine. Money is not everything. (in my case lately..its nothing ;) )

Isn't it against the law to insult/abuse someone because of religion, in the workplace? I have been blessed to have most of my co-workers not to hate me when they find out I'm Muslim. I live down here in the south where some people are actually very closed minded, but even so, they keep their comments to themselves when I'm around. Do they talk a bunch of ####### when I'm not around? Or when I'm in my office and they think I can't hear them? Of course they do! But at least, to my face, they watch what they say.

Oh, and to clarify, I'm in no way, naive enough to think that people don't discriminate against Muslims. I know they do. I'm sure that getting a job and keeping a job while wearing hijab, for example, is very difficult. However, co-workers making blatant, racist, remarks is not tolerated in the places I have worked.

Speaking of profiling I get pulled all the time when I travel for extra searches. One time in Paris I thought I was on my way to prison, I got surrounded by 7 undercover cops, speaking French, which I don’t speak, and telling me I had to go with them, I was in line getting ready to board the plane to home. I had early problems, but for some reason they always give me a hard time. Must look like a mule or something. Lol
