Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Once we get our house fixed up, all paid off, and then sold, I've thought about taking six months to a year off of work and going to live down in Peru and travel throughout the country. That's probably five years or so off though...assuming the housing market's back and hummin' by then.

We talk about it every now and then. Although we would love to, we also realise that Daniel might not be too happy when he has to deal with people on a daily basis. Language is a problem for him too and his job (not army) here is a really good one. There's pros and cons to both places and we will try to make up for it by trying to visit India every 1-2 yrs..

I'll never say never (because I said I would never move back to America and, uh, obviously I did). But over here our standard of living is MUCH higher than it was in the UK. I'm making about the same amount as I did in London, but now I'm self-employed and have a lot more free time. I pay less for my 3-bed house in Burbank than I did for my poky 2-bed flat in North London. We both feel more optimistic about the future and our lives together than we did in the UK. I was pretty sick of making a decent salary but seeing it all go down the drain every month, with pretty much no prospect of amassing savings. There really was no option for us to live anywhere but London due to our career paths, so even moving somewhere less expensive in the country was impossible.

Every time I ask the hubster if he has any regrets about leaving, and if he wants to move back to the UK, he answers, "No, and no." I know several people who would love to move back to the UK asap, but we aren't amongst them. Chacun a son gout, I s'pose.

do you really have to ask?

Yes, I do. Why is my opinion, which was asked for in the OP, awful enough to warrant being called "retarded" by a third party?

it probably would have been easier for me to stay and him to move here, we definitely would be living more comfortably. despite that, i'm looking forward to the change in culture and the experience of living in another country. we may well move back here one day though.

Why didn't you then? Great Britain is lovely.

several reasons. firstly the housing market wasn't doing so badly when we applied. secondly there are some personal things that meant it was appropriate for us to move there at the time of application but things have happened since then to change our situation. hindsight is a wonderful thing. i also don't like the cold. ;)

It's your "reason" for not moving to China to which Mark referred to as being retarted... which if you think about it, is a very lame reason.

Lame or not, it's a question of practicality. How do I find work, and get around, in a place where I can't speak or read the local language? Yes, I'm working on it, and maybe someday when I have a better grasp of the language, we will consider moving there.

I'd say that's a much better answer!

Total immersion in a language and culture can help you learn a lot faster, so it should not be a reason for not moving to your SOs country. After all, we’re expecting them to do the same thing.
