CR-1 is conditional visa - meaning that in event of divorce or else you can loose it and IR-1 is unconditional visa meaning you can't loose it. Most of the time CR-1 is given to a spouse and IR-1 is given to child or parent. Sometimes a spouse can be granted IR-1 visa if the marriage has existed more than 2 years. If you get the CR-1 thow you will have to file for removal of conditions 3 months before your second anniversary.

The deciding factor on which visa an applicant is issued (IR1 versus CR1 visa) is the amount of time that they have been married at the time the visa is issued. If an applicant has been married to their US Citizen spouse for a period of two years or greater they will be issued an IR1 Visa. If they have been married less than two years they will be issued a CR1 Visa

I believe you are correct as that was my understanding as well. However, it may all depend on how well versed in immigration rules the staff is at any particular POE. It might require an adjustment after you have entered. Anyone else know for sure?

correct my fr was given the wrong one they just made an appointment, talked and got ti changed, i dont know any of the details or where they went

I entered USA one month after the second anniversary with CR-1 visa. The guy stamped my passport and wrote CR 1 and the date when it would expire. What confuses me is the validity of green card because shouldn't they have all the papers including marriage certificate in the yellow envelope? Do you really HAVE to stress at the POE that 2 years passed? Will my green card be for 10 or 2 years? Isn't the date when you come to USA what determines the duration of green card?
