I guess I don't get it. When I was shopping for my house, I got quotes online from lendingtree.com and I got quotes from a few local banks. How does race get factored into this? With the banks, I seem to recall filling out some forms and they fed it into the computer and the computer came up with my quote. I'm unclear on how this discrimination happens.

Exactly. What the study did NOT take into consideration is how much debt or wealth a family has overall. This is quite an important factor.

Why are stories so one-sided in the media in the US??

I have to say, I have personally seen more than enough 'minorities' in the US driving $85,000 cars yet living in a run down house, were they refuse to spend $100 to paint their house, clean up the yard or even mow the lawn. This has nothing to do with slavery or being a minority or being disgriminated against. This has a lot to do with a really bad attitude that has developed within a group of people. A reality out of touch with the rest of the world.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I missed what you said here the first time I read this thread, and just wanted to say it was the same for us. Sujeet did all the work to get the mortgage, mostly online and through the computer. He faced no discrimination, while being in such a small minority in the US that I don't even think it's a big enough group yet to be called a minority! (I'm not sure, I haven't looked lately to see if East Indians are actually a "minority" group yet). And we got probably one of the lowest interest rates out there these days 5.59%.

The census calls us Asian Indian.

In the 2000 census, 1.7 million Americans reported their race as being wholly Asian Indian and another 0.2 million reported their race as being partially Asian Indian.

The total populaton of the United States in the 2000 census was 281 million, of which 11.9 million were Asian (includes Asian Indian).

So Asian Indians are less than 1% of the population. Sure doesn't feel that way where I live.. in my county, Asian Indians are closer to 10% of the population. I have biryani and samosa withdrawal every time I spend more than a week in another state :P
