I have a cube booked with Upack but I'm not moving until March 23 (my interview is March 19). I read elsewhere here in another thread that someone else swore by Upack.

we used them.. they were great! all the forms are given to you or are on the website. the drivers are helpful, and the dispatch office lets you know where your truck is all the time, and calls to schedule times, etc.

id recommend, as long as you can load the truck well!

I used them, and they were FANTASTIC with me, I'd highly recommend them.

Well since we're on the subject, I guess I should ask my pertinant questions here XD

I won't be moving for a while, since we haven't sent out the paperwork yet, kinda need to get married for that :P But we should be doing that in a few weeks and getting the whole process done.

Once we are approved for the K-3 though, and I want to move all my stuff to Colorado from Montreal, are they gonna charge me customs for all my belongings(including my car) ? Im not sure I understand... I know when you get a gift, or bring a gift, you have to pay fees, but if this stuff already belongs to me, will I need to pay fees on them for moving them to the US ?

And from experience, what's the price different in let's say driving down with a U-Haul or hiring professional movers ? Is the price difference worth all the trouble ?

Thanks for the insight :) I can't say how happy I am to have found this website. It's awesome to share the frustrations, and the good times with other people living the same thing.

when you are married you get a one time 'freebie' for moving down ALL your personal belongings. dont try to move a cellars worth of liquor or the like, though.

uhaul isnt worth it, and the price difference for us was only about 1,000. movers are great, if you dont mind spending 10k.

I'm paying about $1,100 USD for 1 Upack cube. I'm getting rid of a ton of stuff and what doesn't fit in the cube will get thrown out or go into storage at my mom's house.

Uhaul was not an option as we are moving with 3 cats and a dog and they won't fit in the cab of a truck.

We get one freebie which we can use when the visa comes through ? I don't need to use it right away when I get married right ?

Movers cost 10k ? o_O ouch

I belive one has upto TEN yrs to bring their stuff over without fees!! If it is brand new electronics they can charge you duties on it. They didnt even look inside my Uhaul!!

I went with uhaul, belive it was around $800 cdn from Halifax to DC, plus gas. I only got 10 mpg (but I was doing 80 mph!!) I like to drive, and realy didnt have many other options since I lived in butt of no where NS (greenwood). The one pain with Uhaul (probably because it was a small town) was that even though I booked the truck 1.5 months in advance, they could not fully gaurentee me a truck!! Not al lUhaul trucks can cross the border. But it all worked out.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Well I think I like this option, 800$ sounds better than 10k lol

U haul does get a lot of complaints, so if u dodecide to go with them(pretty much ur only u drive option) ensure you find an u-haul centre u can trust. You an check prices online at http://www.uhaul.com/ I belive I had the 17 ft truck. I had a 1bedroom apartment, not a lot of stuff though. fit easily in that truck.

Has anyone used them, would love to hear your experiences... there were a few people on this thread that said they were going to use them but I couldnt find any reviews from them..

I have Upack dropping off a 28' trailer this Friday, March 9th in Calgary, AB. I will pack it, install the bulkhead wall against my stuff and they will pick it up on Monday, March 11th in the morning. I fly out to Tulsa, OK on Tuesday, March 13th. The next day I have to fax a copy of my I-94 back to ABF in Calgary, AB and then they will send my belongs on there way. I am doing what is called "door to terminal"....once the truck arrives in Tulsa we will rent a UHaul for the day and pick up my stuff from the truck at the ABF terminal there. For this service it is costing me $1300.00 USD.

You need to make packing lists with every box numbered and description of what is in it too. What a pain.......... I'm not sure how detailed the lists need to be. They also want a dollar value on the shipment. Can't wait till all this moving stuff is done........ I'm stressed to the max

After getting estimates and doing total cost comparisons, I chose to use professional movers. The cost was very reasonable, given someone else was doing all the paperwork and heavy lifting. As well, anything damaged in the move would have been covered by insurance. It was definitely nowhere near the 10k Lexi joked about. lol

You do not have to pay duty on any of your personal belongings except for any major items (electronics, furniture, vehicles) purchased within a year prior to your moving. You can find import information on your car here http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/.

I know there is information somewhere on this site with regard to importing personal items if you do a search. Maybe start here http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7. You definitely have a few years to move your belongings.... it's not just a one-time deal.

All the best.

i didnt realize i was joking. here is just one article.

http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/moving_on.../pro-or-no1.asp

and obviously there are trust issues. joes moving company may charge $500 but theres no guarantee youll get your stuff. a good company will be bonded, and that means youll pay more.

lol.
