well Ive had this question on my mind before so now I will throw it out here. Why would muslims have a problem celebrating the birth of Jesus if you consider him to be a great prophet? At least you have an idea of when his bday is or even tho its technically not Dec 25th but its still the time people all over the world celebrate the birth of Jesus. Celebrating Life is always a good thing right? Why not add Him to His own bday celebration?

I feel the same way but what my husband said, before he got here mind you, is that it is mimicking what the Christians are doing. Again I'm sure someone more learned than me can quote it directly from the Quran but regardless I agree with you. Jesus, pbuh, was a prophet to us (muslims) so why not celebrate his b-day. Then again, we don't celebrate Abraham, pbuh's, b-day or Moses', etc. Just thought of new excuses to get presents! lol

I agree with what Bridget and Terrie have said and wanted to add that for some it could be that for Christians in Christmas it's celebrating the birth of Jesus, as the son of God. For us we celebrate Eid as Muslims, but I have a child who is not anything himself but has a Catholic father and has grown up in his American ways enjoying a Christmas tree, gifts, and Santa and my husband has never said anything discouraging toward that. He's picked out the biggest Christmas tree we could wrestle into the house lol. He's all for going all out on both holidays and respecting that everything means something different to each individual person. I adore his open mind :luv:

true you cant celebrate all of them, but if the world is celebrating in rememberence of Jesus' birth, what is wrong with celebrating birth. I think Jehovah Witnesses dont celebrate birthdays, but never heard of muslims that dont celebrate birthdays so Im actually surprised why some muslims would be so against it, other than maybe culturally they didnt do it back home in their country. I know alot of muslims here that do celebrate it and they do say that it is the time we celebrate Jesus' birth. Just wondering.

right, basically same with Adams family in Egypt too. They do not celebrate bdays. but Not all muslims do not celebrate bdays. Not even sure what the majority do. But if they celebrate Mohameds bday why would they not celebrate Jesus' bday if they consider 'both' of them to be prophets. Wasnt the birth of Jesus even in the Quran as something special or miraculous? Why would muslims not celebrate something that is even so special in the quran?

Most likely Tamara because the holiday is not celebrating The Prophet Jesus but many say to this day...Jesus' birthday, the son of god. I do agree no big deal though..since its not truly his birthday anyway and as far as I know (not claiming ot know too much...lol) but many people can't even decide when his birth actually was...

We do have a tree and exchange gifts but our celebration is for Old Saint Nick when he stops by and my hubbys bday. Works out just fine! :P

I've been in Morocco a couple of times during the holidays and the Marjane has Christmas (Noel) presents and decorations, and you see some shops having "Noel" red & green decorations and slogans in French.

Next year we'll have a tree and do all the secular things associated with the holiday. This year we're too busy. ;)

I was reading this and I just wanted to add my response in case anyone comes back to the topic.

I was raised Christian, my father and mother were very involved in Church. My father was a deacon , then an elder, he and my mohter taught Bible classes, I taught kids classes when I was a young teen and adult, But we never ever celebrated Christmas as a religious holiday. We were taught it was not something we were told to do but a man made thing, wich is true, The church made up Christmas because it was a big Pagan holiday and they wanted a "Christian " holiday.

My parents grew up in Arkansas and Oklahoma during the Great Depresion. My mother and father provided wonderfull awesome Christmas for us because they never had that kind of Christmas growin up. We always always had a tree, lights, cookies, sweets, stockings, great presents and that one extra special toy or thing you wanted for the whole year. So to give it up is soooooooooooooo hard for me. But now I see it so comercialized and when you are struggling with kids its kind of good that I dont do it anymore. However , I still go to my familys house and my kids enjoy gifts from them and we eat eat eat and eat. And play games etc... so I still get some of it.

My first husband, thier father, joined in in the beginning of our marriage and as I was not Muslim for several years, I still wanted it, tree, gifts, etc. But later when we both became more "religious," we choose not to participate but we still went on that day to enjoin with food, and socialize and my kids got gifts. Then his Saudi roots kicked in (even though he is Palestinian} and he forbade me from going a few times , we fought over it. Now my new husband , from Pakistan, is not so keen on it, however we did go last year and I still intend to go to join with my family. I hope he comes too.

The one thing that is great for us is I see Eid as a holiday. I really feel it now, and even my kids look forward to it. We try to make it special , and they do miss school, and we try to have a great day. You see as Christian, Chrismas was not ordained by God, or even given as a holiday to us. But as a Muslim, God tells us in theQuran and in Suannah, that we can have Eid, that we have to have Eid. So thats the difference to me in Christmas and Eid.

I think what you do if your Muslim is between you and Allah. And if Eid is not as or more important to your kids and to you , than you have to consider that.
