Tinned Vegetables Cheaper?

Yeah, I've never been able to figure out why the selection of fruits and veggies is so much less around here than back home. I mean really, the growing season is nearly double that of most of Canada, and yet I can't for the life of me find parsnips or rhubarb on a regular basis around here! And usually whenever I *have* found parsnips, they're old and wobbly. I don't think I saw any rhubarb this year at all. We couldn't even find any seeds or plants to put in our garden for crimeny! It grows like a weed up home, and can't find it here to save a life! :(

That's because rhubarb is one of the most horrible "foods" known to man. It is an offense against nature to eat it, and I think is grounds for removal from the US.

That's why they say: "Never rub another man's rhubarb."

I'm in St. Louis, and rhubarb is not grown here that I know of. Way too hot. My MIL has some in Chicago though, so maybe that's about as far "south" in the US you can safely grow it. They do provide some in the grocery store when it's fresh and in season, and I usually buy some then, make a few things, and freeze the rest.

The topic about canned goods...so much depends on what you were raised with I think. I don't ever remember opening a can for my kids in 20 years. Frozen foods yes. I did can (jar) my own foods however but it wasn't the same. Gene on the other hand grew up with canned fruit and veggies, when it wasn't fresh. His family members still used tinned things. Now his father has HBP, and was told NO TINNED veggies! Really high sodium content. ick! Now his Mom is moving to frozen, and fresh, and says she's amazed at how good the frozen veggies are.

So much seems to depend on where you live. I came from Saskatchewan, where, when not in season, you either couldn't get a certain food, or you'd pay through the nose for it. Here in St. Louis, some veggies and fruits during the season as dirt cheap, out of season, still reasonable.
