Relationships not for love, but for an easy Green Card

 Share

Are you being used/using someone for an easy Green Card?

161 members have voted

  1. 1. Are you a US citizen who's in a loving relationship, or are you being used for an easy Green Card?

    • I've come to the conclusion that I'm just being used for an easy Green Card.
      5
    • I think it's for love, but I've sometimes suspected that I'm being used for an easy Green Card.
      12
    • I think my fiance/spouce is with me purely for love, I just happen to be a US citizen and he/she needs a Green Card in order to live with me here.
      79
    • I am not a US citizen (vote for this option so as not to skew the poll, then vote honestly in the following poll question).
      65
  2. 2. Are you a foreign national who's in a loving relationship, or are you using your American fiance/spouse so you can get an easy Green Card?

    • I'm not really in love, I'm just using my American fiance/spouse as an easy way to get a Green Card.
      8
    • A little of both. I love my American fiance/spouse, but if we had to live in my home country and couldn't move to America, I probably wouldn't marry him/her.
      3
    • I'm with my American fiance/spouse purely for love. I'm only getting a Green Card because I want to be with him/her, and he/she just happens to live in America.
      76
    • I'm a US citizen, not a foreign national (vote for this so as not to skew the poll, then vote honestly in the above poll question).

My fiance is a US citizen. We both share love and care for each other. If there's a great choice that I could let him stay here with me, I will. But at the current situation of my country, he will not have good opportunity for his profession and I know how much he enjoy his profession. I am not that selfish to let him sacrifice so much for me, he already doing it right now. I know what makes him feel fullfill as an individual, although I know my love for him makes him happy but there's other aspect of life aside from it. I love him, he is one of the person I ever know with big heart, he loves me and makes me feel happy and contented for life that I couldn't ask for more. I'll do things too that will make him happy. And it is to be able to grow also as an individual and to be able to achieve his dreams. As for me, actually I feel contented to be with him and do some of my hobbies because I'm tired of doing works to prove something as a career woman.

I'd guess I'd have to say there is dishonesty everywhere, there is no reason we would not find any here. I agree with you Damian and I do feel sad for the older gentlemen who fall and do not realize they are being used. In my case I would have considered moving to Ecuador to be with my fiancee if it were not for my daughter. My daughter lives here in the states and I want to be close to her and be involved in her life. My fiancee had no intentions or thoughts of moving to the US, as I never had any plans to marry someone from out of the country ( or for that matter marry again, period.) but life had other plans for us. I only married Charles so I could have only 6 weeks of unpaid maternity leave when I have my baby, instead of a year paid in Brazil. That's how much I don't care about money and love working.

Obviously it happens, but there's plenty of inconvenience for the non-USC's out there coming to the US. Many face language barriers, give up good steady jobs for crappy ones here, give up seeing their families and friends, and everything familiar to them.

I know my SO wouldn't come to the US if not for me. While the financial burden is mostly mine at this point, he's the one giving up everything else. It's easy to lose perspective of that while you're half a world apart. I can't say I could give up everything he will have to- including pretty much everything he owns. I'm lucky I found such a wonderful, loving man; he just happened to be German.

that gives me an idea for a poll

I think that if you rally have to ask yourself, "Is this for love, or for a green card?", then maybe you should'nt be getting married to that person. My husband said that he didnt care where he lived as long as we are together, and I chose to believe him.

Or at least you should be getting paid, if it's the latter

We're married for love. I'm the USC. I was living in Ethiopia before I met my hubby and loved it so much I knew I wanted to move back before I ever left. Once we got serious, I did my best to find a good job there but I couldn't. So, I went back the US and he came here. : )

Someone asked a question about bringing family members to the US for health care. Health care in some places isn't just inadequate its risky. And often there is a lot of things that are unavailable. For example, my mother-in-law is a Type II diabetic and its difficult to get insulin or regular care. Sometimes she has it sometimes she doesn't. She's not able to refrigerate it. She's suffering from complications of diabetes like neuropathy and kidney problems- but there are no places to get dialysis. So its sad that she's going to die from diabetes at an earlier age than if she lived in the US and it could be better managed and progress more slowly. We've discussed bringing her her but ruled it out because we have no money. If she comes here, she won't have health insurance. We can't add her to ours, she's too sick to work and doesn't speak English. So her care would be completely out of pocket. So I hope that gives a little insight to the person who answered the question. I guess for people with money, bringing family over for health care is a big benefit. If anyone has ideas, let me know!

My husband and I would rather live in Italy but I have one more degree to finish in the US and I want him to be able to travel to the United States with me to visit my family.

Plus, I'm only using him for the potential EU citizenship in 2014.

What but fate and love (and the Internet) could have drawn a 15-year old woman and a 62-year old man, half a world apart, together?

I can see it in her eyes when we chat by webcam, I can feel it in my heart when I send her the money she asks for to give to her mother who has leukemia, her father who has tuberculosis, her grandmother with hepatitis, and her 9 sickly brothers and sisters, all lepers.

When we finally get a chance to meet in person, I'm sure it will be confirmed.

My wife and I are in love for love's sake.

I believe now or at the early stage, everybody would say that is for love. But how about after a few years, come back to answer this question? I know many people would not marry one in the same country only after a few meets. Some people want to use this to change their status. They would say, nothing to lose.
