Hi,

I am posting this question for someone that I met a couple of days ago at work. I met a lady from Russia who was issued a green card through the immigration lottery program 4 years ago. She says that she is desiring a divorce from her husband. Apparently her husband is abusive on many levels.

She was under the impression that she could not divorce until she becomes a citizen of the United States. I told her that i didn't think this was true and in fact she can divorce because she is a permanent resident. Am I correct?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

hmmm, I find that odd that she would have to wait 2 years longer for her citizenship if she divorces her husband being that her green card was not issued based upon marriage. She received her green card through the Lottery program. Why would a divorce cause her to have to wait an additional two years to get citizenship? In other words your saying that it will take a total of 7 years for her to get citizenship if she divorces?

Anyone else have any thoughts or info on this?
