Vaccination Records lost

I'm sure many of you got vaccinations in school from public health nurses. They give you that little piece of paper and tell you to make SURE to give it to your mum and dad for safekeeping.

I made sure to give mine to my mum. I thought that they were important, since they made such a big deal out of herding us down to the gym to line up for our shots.

I was talking to mum about my visa requirements last night. Her latest great reveal (she's had many of them since I decided I was moving to the US, and they just keep getting better and better. The one before this was that she apparently "doesn't believe in weddings" so she won't in any way support mine with time or money, though she'll come eat the food I pay for)? She LOST all my immunization records. That's right. Lost them. We never moved. Nothing. But she lost them anyway. She can produce the DOG'S immunization records, since apparently those are actually important (her words, not mine) but she can't produce mine.

The only ones I'm missing from their list are a) Chicken pox (I've had it) and B) HPV (which I'm delaying as long as possible in hopes they'll change that one because I don't want that vaccine).

Am I going to have to have them ALL OVER AGAIN? All of them were done through the school after infancy. I know that my infant ones are in my medical files and I can find them, I think, through my doctor. At least, I hope so. But what about my school age ones? Is there somewhere I can go to find these missing records? Am I going to have to have blood tests to test for immunities? Or am I just going to have to have them all over?

This is one of those moments where I just want to scream at my mother for her total lack of foresight. She does this to me ALL THE TIME.

March 13, 2009--Visa application handed to the post office.

March 16, 2009--Visa application received by Vermont Service Centre at 11:01 am. Let's hope that he actually put in everything he thought he did and they don't send it back to us!!

March 23, 2009--Got the whole package back. The cheque was apparently filled out incorrectly, thanks to the fact that his moronic flatmates helped him and instructed him wrong for the first cheque he ever filled out.

March 30, 2009--NOA1

August 12, 2009--Touched

September 1, 2009, received Package 1 from Montreal--but where is our NOA2???

HPV requirement hasn't been around long so I doubt it will change. If you are under 27 you will need the series of shots.

If you have no record of your vaccines the doc can perform a titer test to check for immunities. Shouldn't create a problem for you.

Hopefully the distance will help the relationship with your mother. ;)

good luck

as Kim indicated... HPV is a within the last 6 mos. or so addition... so unless you are delaying to get over the age threshold, I would not expect a change in the near term either

I know how recent it is. Which is why I'm kind of hoping that it will be overturned as unconstitutional or something, because US citizens are not required to have the vaccine. I know it's a VERY VERY VERY thin hope. Highly unlikely. But I want to delay as long as possible, just in case. I have my reasons, many would disagree with them.

Thanks for the advice on how to get proof of immunizations. I dislike needles a great deal, so I don't wish to have all my vaccines all over again!

A natural born USC can go his/her whole life without a vaccination of any kind... If the basis of your arguement were to hold true, then all required vacciantions would have to be thrown out....

A discrimination arguement won't hold either, as discrimination needs to be inconsistent against a particular "class" of people... as long as all intended immigrants are held to the same standard it too would fail on that basis.

The only way for it to go away is if the CDC changes its mind...

I lost all of my vaccinations too, so I called up the health department of each town I had lived in and got my records faxed or mailed to me.

It really wasn't that hard at all.

I think the OP is just generally stressed out by the process and didn't know what would happen now that she doesn't have these records. When I realized I had lost my records, I was a little up in arms too. :P

My mother didn't have my immunization records either, so I had to contact ... err, Immunization Canada? Public Health? I think they were in Sudbury or Thunder Bay. They were able to send me my childhood vaccination records, at least.

You may be able to contact the hospital/clinic that did your vaccines and get a record from them.

I verbally told my panel physician that I'd had chicken pox and showed him one of my scars, I also came in with a record from my ER trip to the hospital that sewed shut my finger and gave me a Tetanus (and whatever else is in there) booster shot, and even though they forgot to write on the form that they'd given me one, the panel physician wrote it in for me because it was a given that they would have provided me with the booster in that situation.

They do, however, have to pursue exemptions for those vaccinations to send their child to public school. I understand the need for the vaccinations. I do NOT understand the need for a vaccine for an STD that neither myself nor my fiancé have, given that we're getting married, which generally means that you're not going to be going around having sex with everyone else in the country.

I lost all of my vaccinations too, so I called up the health department of each town I had lived in and got my records faxed or mailed to me.

This is awesome news. I went to only two schools my whole life--one elementary and one high school--and both were in the same town.

I don't see why you work yourself up this much over this???

I don't like needles. Heck, I don't even like doctors. I've spent FAR too much time dealing with them in my life. I HATE my doctor. A great deal. He misdiagnosed me once and very nearly cost me my life. So, to an extent, I'm afraid of the whole vaccination process. The needle's actually not as bad as the doctor I have to go to to get it!

I am largely upset over the fact that something I thought would be easy is less easy. I was always careful to take care of those little sheets until I got home to my mum, then give them to her straight away. I was more careful with them than any other document I've ever had. I was more careful with them, even as a teenager, than I was with my wallet. To discover that they aren't in my "file" in the family filing cabinet, because mum didn't think they were important is incredibly frustrating. Part of my frustration is because in one of my previous jobs, I worked with disabled kids and the people who hired me took me at my word that I could produce my immunization records at any time I was asked. They were very tight for staff and I hadn't thought to bring the records with me on hiring day (I'm a bit frazzled when I interview for jobs and I didn't think about it because it was different from other jobs). I feel as though my mother has made a liar out of me!

no exemption required as the easier path is called "home" school...

I am not nor do I intend to argue the merits of HPV and or the reasons why it is now required... other than it is simply not a constitutional or dicriminatory issue that will go away onthat basis, near term

YMMV

It's my mum. The real irony of her #######? My whole life, she's accused me of "intentionally flaunting conventions to be different" because apparently I want to be the most special snowflake. And now she's telling me "NO WEDDING FOR J00 BECAUSE IT IS AN ANTIQUATED TRADITION THAT COSTS MONEY AND IS STUPID AND EVERYONE DOES THEM SO WHY SHOULD YOU?"

I'm not sure whether to laugh, or call the men in the white coats.

Whether it would fail or not, we already had a thread where most people found it to be pretty ridiculous that a woman does not have the choice to do this or not. HPV is not Polio and will not begin a national disaster.

But I digress.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Omg are we long lost sisters!?

My mother said the same thing, didn't even like the man I was marrying, but she did come around and she came to my wedding, and she didn't think she would have fun down here but she did. :)

Hopefully yours will come around too hun. (F)
