Do you mean the ITIN for filing taxes in the US? You can only get that at the time you send in your tax return. There's a form to include with your return (sorry, can't e-file when you're doing ITIN application). I think it's W7. Fill that out, include her income on the form and send it in. They'll mail you the ITIN within a few weeks.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

I had same situation. My wife and kids are in Colombia. I called the IRS. Here is the answer to you question. They will not have a SS number, as they are not in the USA. When you file income tax on 1040 or what-ever, you would normally put in , SS Number or ITN # . In that space write in "apply for ITN Now". It take 6 to 8 weeks to receive it.

I filed a joint return while my wife was still in the Philippines. When I filed I included the W7 ITIN application for my wife and daughter. My wife got the ITIN but not my daughter.

Yes to below. Did you know that if you are married to a foreigner you do not qualify for the stimulus package or EIC.

You file a W-7 with your taxes. They are picky about the identification. In our case the IRS would not issue one after I submitted birth certificate, marriage license (both from NSO) and postal ID. They only issued it after I submitted notarized copy of her philippine passport. BTW the IRS wont issue one for our daughter she has to enter the USA and they will issue SSN.

We did not qualify for the stimulus because she has ITIN and not SSN, but filing jointly instead of married filing seperate saved much more than the stimulus...
