I have always used my knowledge of what others make to get more money - the secret is to not let your employer know exactly what you know when you negotiate. If they are screwing you, they are probably aware of that fact but hope that you don't notice.

Exactly. I would never go to an employer directly and demand I earn what xyz person is earning. Most managers will resent that.

Finally...we all agree on something...knowledge.

Of course. As rkl57 posted above, there are various ways to go about it. Otherwise changing jobs is the way to go. I have never wasted any time arguing with an employer over pay. I cannot count the times people only realized they were being screwed over by their employer after we casually discussed pay. Now, I am talking about discussing in a friendly manner. I guess a lot of people here would turn it into a pissing contest and possibly get offended. If someone earns more than me good for them. Hopefully I can learn something from them. If someone earns less than me I will give them pointers or even help them get a job elsewhere. No hard feelings for me.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I guess it all depends on the type of work. In my career everyone has a pretty good idea on who is getting paid what and what so and so pays. It's usually determined by experience, or BS, which pisses me off as I'm not a BS'r. But the BS'rs in this field are usually noticed pretty quickly and if they can't handle it they don't last. I know if I'm full time and we hire another hand for a tournament or long delivery, he will probably be getting more then me. But he'll be on the daily rate and I would be a full timer. No problems here because I have been the one getting the daily on other op's. In this field it's nice to know what others are getting paid when it's time to find a ride. You know what to ask for, as you know what that particular opperation pays and can make a judgement on asking based on that info. You also know which opperations to stay away from because they aren't known to pay very well.

Yep exactly.

I have no patience for #### talkers either.

I've just been brought up that it was really tacky. Not sure there's anything that can change my take on it. Only with very close friends and family would I feel comfortable sharing salary info.

That's how I was brought up too.

In my family we're very open about money but a lot of the reason is because part of the money given to the entire family in a trust (I'm talking like 100+ people) was set up for the corporation that was created for everyone (my grandmother and her brothers and sisters) to be able to vote on things as far as the 2000+ acres and money that was left for the family as a whole and for upkeep on the land. Other things were set up individually and split up per family and then those things have to be voted on as well. Anyways, it's a big clusterf*ck and harder to explain than I thought it would be, but bottom line...we're very open about money around here.

We're very open with salaries in my family and closest friends. A lot of us make more than others (obviously) and no one really takes it badly. We just wanna know what they did to get there :) The drawback is people expect you to help them out but the CD always makes for a good excuse for not being able to "at this time".

I hate that my sister knows my monthly "salary" because she gets less and then tries to get money from me whe she runs out

Make like Nancy Reagan and just say no :innocent:

I say no most of the time. She collects men to buy her things so she doesn't need me :P

You can't do anything in our family but that our Mother won't ask us how much it costs; how much we're getting paid; if we paid cash or borrowed money; etc.

She and Dad always talked about money in front of us when we were children and I'm grateful for that. I think it taught us how to handle our money as adults. But it's sort of annoying to have her asking us about stuff all the time now. It seems more like nosiness than concern.
