I have no idea how accurate his predictions are but I am not in denial that things are going to get very bad. I don't really see the United States breaking apart but financial times are getting tougher every day and I am not too hopeful that this will turn around in a few months. The collapse of certain financial institutions and the big 3 auto makers will domino throughout our economy and have devastating consequences.

Like Charles, I am stocking up on the essentials and preparing for the worst. I only hope it does not come.

The economy is a global crisis, not just a U.S. one. If the U.S. were to ever secede chunks of the country it's in an internal, civil war like conflict. It makes no sense for Americans to lose solidarity in something that largely isn't (beyond the vague predictions of southern U.S. Republicans trying to steer the auto industry to the south) even remotely seen as some conflict between certain parts of the country. I just don't see the attitude, nor could I figure out who would be at conflict with who.

If you're stocking up and it isn't for some normal disaster preparedness, I think both you and charles are a bit paranoid.

Why do you say his credibility is down the tubes? He has been fairly accurate so far. I say give it some time to see what develops. I sure hope he is wrong, but I don't see where he has been proven wrong yet. What he is forecasting is not out of the realm of possibility.

I don't think its beyond the realm of possibility to be honest - though I doubt that the current economic crisis will bring that about. I can see some of the US' largest state economies possibly splitting away (potentially) in the event of a total economic collapse in certain industries (like auto manufacturing) if the other states are forced to subsidise them to their own detriment. Either that or the US as a whole will move to the left - in line with the Europe Union.

But politically at least - the US population does seem divided enough for something like to happen, given the right conditions.

Stooopid Russian guy!!

Lets throw rocks at him....

Here is my story. I've lived problem free life, payed my taxes. One day I decided to marry this girl. But to do so would require her to come to US of A, and so it started. My problem free live turned in to free problems from USCIS! Sure things turned to unsure, certain dates turned to aproximation within months. All logical thinking was out the door, as I filed my papers withing famous Vermont Centre!

Well its hard to know what's coming out of Russia, what with the talk about Putin becoming President again. Even the media there seems intent on projecting the image that all is fine and dandy, though from some interviews I've seen it seems clear that Russian journalists won't comment much at all on what they think about it.

Its tough being a journalist in Russia.

I'm sure.

The few journos I've seen won't offer any opinion at all on what they think about Putin, or what his return to power means for the future of the country.

The only guy I've seen making actual pointed criticisms is Gary Kasparov, but from what I understand - he's in the weeds politically and there is actually a lot of popular support for Putin.

Garik has his own agenda, and to make himself heard he is going against the strongest political figure in Russia. Not because he wants to spill the truth, as he claims.
