in my 30 years of living in Canada, 15 in Manitoba and 15 in BC.. I don't recall ever hearing anyone say they hated people from Ontario...

I'm not saying I hated people from Ontario, just didn't care for the attitude that sometimes came from some of them. Going to university in Ontario was very eye-opening!

Maybe hate isn't the best word, resent or dislike might be a better word to describe what I've been told. Maybe it's because Ontario seems to be more closely related to the US then the others so the attitute might be different then the rest of Canada as a whole, not sure...

How can you honestly say that the Quebecois, you know..those people who tried to separate from Canada a couple of times, hate ontarians because they act/feel superior? Come on. Think about that one...just for a second.

I think this is all BS. I have been all over the country, met people from all over, and not once has someone told me they hated me because I'm ontarian. If someone hates me, hate me from ME, not because of my province.

And resent us FOR WHAT? What have WE done? Please someone point out to me what Ontario has done to the rest of Canadians out there that has made it hard for them in their lives???

This is actually making me pissed off so I'm staying out. <_<

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

I don't want to make you mad

However, I will tell you what I have heard in Alberta - now this is just my own experience, I do not speak for all Albertans - however I was born there, as were my parents and their parents and I have heard 'stuff' so i'm just telling you what I heard

The recurring theme in the talk of 'Ontario' is the whole Liberal vs Conservative - thing. When Albertans go to vote, or have a say, generally, in how the country is run, they are/were time and again overruled by their Eastern brothers and sisters in that they generally vote liberal, while some of the Albertans that I know do not feel that the Liberal party represents Alberta well.

Because of this scenario - that generally Ontario has a greater say in the running of the country due to their population - some people do not speak kindly of Ontario, which of course has the effect of people not speaking kindly about people who are from Ontario.

It's really not surprising - it's basically the same thing as people who dislike 'Americans', when in fact it may be the American government foreign policy or their gun laws - or whatever - that they don't really like.

That is exactly what it is like. People are associating a province with it's people. I have heard people here state that people from Ontario (because all people from Ontario live in Toronto it seems..the whole 13 million of us) are stuck up and think the world revolves around us. To my knowledge of growing up there all my life, that is just not true. Most of the people I've met are humble Canadians, just like the Easterners and Westerns of Canada.

As far as the voting process goes, that isn't our fault now is it. People in Alberta have a lot of things that Ontarian's don't. I would have loved to live with no PST, then my parents could have probably been able to afford a better car. ;)

But again, my whole point is, is that if people do have those hatreds and feelings, they are simply ignorant. I've never been bad or rude to any one, especially to someone visiting my province. I have loved to meet people from all over Canada and see how different our cultures are within one nation.

Remember these are Canadians they won't say it to your face. And the whole Quebec/Ontario thing is a whole other issue. I remember hearing countless stories of the fights on the border towns all the time with Ontario people going to Hull and massive bar fights erupting from the people on both sides. It's there and it's prevelent all over the nation that there is just an underlying resentment issue when people think of Ontario.

Quebec probably resents them because the power of focus isn't on them, instead it's on their neighbor to the east.

As mentioned it's the center of the capital and decision making, Toronto being the largest city, more population in the province, more focus on the province in the Canadian spotlight. Center of commerce and trade easily with multiple border points to the US to US major cities (not little towns on the other side). Not to even mention the whole media and television/movie industry (other then some in British Colombia, but usually for US shows). Same reason many people aren't too fond of California here. Ontario is in a sence Canada's California, just with more industrial settings...

A lot of reasons people think that way. I have met quite a few and been told by many others about that resentment in my years.

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

Hi Everyone,

I totally agree with the following statement, especially so, as I currently live in New York State and have before lived in Ontario:

For the record.... I believe New York and Ontario are nothing alike, and neither do I believe that they feel they are the centre of the universe.

There is definitely a difference between these two places! And to each their own, as to what they believe is really the centre/center of the universe....

Hmmm...Instead, maybe the centre/center of the universe is here on "Visa Journey", as everyone, regardless of what part of the universe or world they are from, gather here together to discuss (in a nice and friendly way) immigration-related issues and other issues...

Ant (The centre/center of my immigration universe= Visa Journey)

Well if the rest of the country is so concerned with the amount of power Ontario has, perhaps they should just pick up and move to the other side of the country, join forces with the Maritimers and Newfoundland and then overpower Ontario and just quit whinging :P

Sheesh, Ontario can't help it that the population is higher there than in prairie and western provinces, now can they? Nor can Ontario help it that Alberta is the bible belt of the country, and that easterners (including Quebecers!) tend to be a lot more Liberal, and liberal, than them! Why hate Ontario for being liberal? For chrissakes, Alerberta's right next door to the (formerly) Socialist province of Saskatchewan! Birthplace of universal healthcare! (the world revolves around Saskatchewan yanno, just check their clocks next time all the rest of us have to switch to day light savings...their clocks don't have to change!).

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Very very good example of the type of generalization that starts arguments.

Why did Sask get brought up? Personally I know it is the best province, but I rather keep it a secret and keep the population to a million, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I lived in border town for 5 years..you know, Ottawa? And my friends and I used to go to Hull all the time to drink and be merry. We were always welcomed with opened arms, and not once in 5 years did I ever experience a fight.

I'm sorry, warlord, but I think you are taking a stereotypical argument and stringing it a long way past its prime. If some Canadians have these feelings, they surely aren't the majority of the country. If you poll this forum, for example, which has lots of Canadians, really none of us seem to be carrying around with us these stereotypes or feelings of resentment.

Flames... you just blew Sask's cover!
