Police seeking illegal immigrant man caught with 600,000 counterfeit condoms

Vikas Gupta, 21, was arrested by members of the New Jersey State Police Cargo Theft Unit Feb. 8, 2008, on charges of possession of counterfeit goods with intent to sell. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison on the single charge.

Lt. Christopher Engram of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Fugitive Task Force said the counterfeit condoms were stolen from a warehouse in the Carteret area and found up in Gupta's possession.

Gupta was not charged in the theft and no one at the warehouse was charged in connection with the counterfeit goods.

Engram declined to mention the name the condoms were being sold under, but said it was a major brand. The actual make of the condoms and where they came from was unknown, he said.

But the condoms Gupta was caught with were substandard and clearly not what they were purported to be when first inspected by investigators, Engram said.

Undercover cargo theft investigators learned of Gutpa's attempt to sell the condoms, set up a meeting with him and haggled over the price, Engram said.

"First the amount he wanted was a dollar a piece, then it was 75 cents, then 50 cents, then 40,'' Engram said.

He was arrested on the spot. Two other men were charged with Gupta, Engram said.

Gupta was released without bail. It was later learned he was in the country illegally, Engram said.

After his indictment on the counterfeiting charge, he missed two court hearings, the latest on Oct. 27.

Engram said the Indian-born Gupta left the United States after he was charged but is believed to have returned.

my guess, if they were being sold by a guy from india, the defect was they were too large.

Do they look for faces or certain markings?
