Thanks to all! (Yes, Satellite, it was about time!) Elena e-mailed me yesterday and said it was officially OK to break out the champagne and celebarte. DHL delivered the passport to her house with the visa in it. (No more superstitions - talking about something before it happens and messing it up. Nope. - We're good now.)

Congrats Slim! When are you planning to have her fly to America? My Katya is flying to Atlanta on July 12th on Air France. I can't wait! I just hope the dreaded Atlanta POE isn't too bad. :o

Ouch, ouch, ouch!! I can feel the lashes cat-o-nine tails!!

At least she's going in class with Air France. I cashed in points for a business TransAtlantic. A peak experience just like being in France!! Incroyable!! What the Italians call "la dolce far niente!"

ASAP!!! However, I used the bulk of my "assets" to get her to Moscow for the interview, so I'm crunching the numbers now. I'm so broke, it's not even funny. From a strictly I-134 point of view, I'm sitting pretty. But, from a "how are we going to eat tomorrow?" point of view, I need to do some pretty good financial planning before having her join me here.

We want to do it now, but it's probably better to wait about a month or two. The visa is good for six months for a reason. Sure it sucks to have to wait a few more months, but I would hate to bring her here and say "hi honey, welcome to America... now go to work." (It's going to be something like that anyway, but hopefully there'll be a little more time in there to get "reaquainted" before we have to dive into our jobs.)

What's probably going to happen though.... I'll throw caution to the wind, and just sign up for a new credit card and get crazy in debt to get her here. We'll spend the next couple of years trying to break even, but hey, we'll be trying to break even... together! (She keeps telling me that "two heads working together are better than one." and.... She's always been right so far.)

Sounds like you'll have a fabulous lady by your side!

That's really hard to do.

Keep me and Maria informed; don't hesitate to use the personal email for non-list important things to chit-chat if you want.

Perhaps it would be better to bring her now and go through JFK and have her working within a few weeks? Together and working hard is still better than being apart. My wife was working side by side with me and literally got hired the day after her EAD came. Otherwise there is no way to survive on the income I have. Plus working in America sure helps improve conversational English which most Russians could use some help in.

How long does EAD take, and what is required? (Is it automatic upon arrival, or do more forms need to be filled out?)

If you don't get the temporary EAD, good until you are married or K1 expires which ever happens first, then it can be a pretty long time. We didn't go through JFK which is my understanding as the last POE that "sometimes or "upon request" will issue a temporary EAD. Without the temporary EAD you have to actually get married and apply for AOS along with your I-765 EAD. Then the processes could take anywhere from a few weeks to the maximum length which is 90+ days beyond the NOA1 for the I-765. Back when we did this we got our EAD the same day because our local office still did walkin appointments. But this was still after marriage and honeymoon. This is not the case anymore.

Even if you do pull of the temporary EAD through JFK you still need to wait about 2-4 weeks before the social security number arrives before she can start working. And at best you are looking at 2 months of "legal" work. Which beyond flipping burgers is a hard find. But then again any job still pays! After you get married and your temporary EAD expires you can no longer work and your employer "should" get in trouble for employing you. But don't forget that overstays and illegal work are both forgiven when marrying as US citizen and applying for AOS through that citizen. Just some things to keep in mind when you are making your final decisions.

Since the end of walkin appointments at local USCIS offices back in April of 2005 it has become nearly impossible to have a smooth transition from a JFK issued temporary EAD to a properly filed 1 year EAD. The gap in processing time is always greater than 1 day.

WOW!!! Thanks Satellite. That definitely clears it up, but it doesn't make me too happy! I'm not sure what we're going to do then, becuase in order for us to pay all the bills, she's going to have to work. We may be able to get by a few months without her working, but what is she going to do in the mean time? Sit at home all day? Explore her new city? I guess we'll have to do what the majority of immigrants have done since immigration started in this country.... WORK ANYWAY!!! (Or just keep on getting new credit cards!)

I had the same question in my head for a while...I guess she can learn english by watching TV a lot. There are classes she can take English as second language that are not too expensive...She will probably cook and clean a lot:) I would not worry about budget too much , Russians know how to live on limited budget very well...unless she has super high expectations.

I really do not care what my hubbie does when he gets here... I am already prepared to cut back on my personal expenses and stick with neccessary bills, no more shopping for fun and dining out every day for sure...:)It will take time, and a cultural shock , adaptation before I will through a fit. 90 days should be enough, by than he will get his EAD anyways. So that's my current plan, how practical it is ....I am not sure...I have lived by myself for so long, I don't even know how it feels to have another person around the house all the time...

I am just excited he will be here, all other minor issues can be resolved as tehy come up! I am sure you will be just fine too :)

Good Luck and Best wishes to you.

Eva.

Does anyone have any interview questions from recent that they can share?
My fiancee was asked two years ago:

Has he met your parents and do they approve?

Thanks! I wonder if she tells them we exchange greetings on the phone a couple times and her mother has actually approved. Would it be worthwhile for her mother to write her a letter about us saying she approves? How about grown children?

I don't know if a letter would help or not, but it seems that they are willing to consider any evidence at the embassy... so, it can't hurt!

But, it seems the most important thing is for your fiancee to convince the interviewer that she is in love with you and there is an ongoing relationship. Being sure of herself enough to show the interviewer that there is a real relationship seems to be the most important thing at the interview.
