Or perhaps the idea of a Gay Heritage/History/Whatever Day in a school/society setting is as preposterous as arguing on slippery slopes once again.

Its pretty simple- gays get the same legal rights/protections as non-gays or not. In a modern, democratic society, where group will is not imposed when the actions of one group do not infringe upon the actions of another, it should be assumed all groups that have behavioral parity receive the same legal rights.

Note how animals, multiple partners, and children do not come into that very simple, horizontal bit of reason.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Gays don't hassle people? Check out the TV coverage they have equal ability to piss people off and are more likely to get away with it.

Whoa man, gays hassle people like.. *gasp*, normal people. Guess that means they shouldn't be afforded marriage. You sure convinced me there.

If the Obama election meant anything it was that you've got to be able to appeal to enough of the majority to win and the gay movement isn't going win over a lot of people with tactics that turn off people who may have been sympathatic.

I'm sure there was bound to be a minority voting against it. This time it happened to be blacks. I don't really care to dissect things in this manner because the overall vote is what matters, not WHO voted for it. One urban area did vote for it, and that's Los Angeles. You can say blacks here were much more tolerant for it, and blacks down there weren't. Again, doesn't matter and isn't relevant to the debate.

Your sexual orientation isn't where I going here and I certainly didn't see porno images of black men for Black History Month in high school. The fact you couldn't come with a single serious image of a Gay History Month tells me most of the movement is as serious in tone as a gay rights parade.

Well, what was Black History Month about again? Oh, right, HISTORY. What would Gay History Month be about? Oh yeah, HISTORY. Remember, it is you who is focused on the illustrations of sex in history class, not me.

Note how animals, multiple partners, and children do not come into that very simple, horizontal bit of reason.

Of course not, but we may as well start harping on who supports animal marriages and polygamy.

Polygamy -- Mormon church.

Animal marriages -- rural people (the ones with animals, duh)

Both of these groups vote overwhelmingly against gay marriage.

The truth is that you're living in a world that no longer exists. I, along with millions of Americans, clearly see the world the way it as -- and we embrace what it can be. You, on the other hand, seem incapable of looking for new ideas or moving beyond what worked in the past.

Yes, yes, I see it now. In Bizarro World what has worked in the past must be discarded and replaced with the new vision of the anointed. The new vision of plural marriages of anyone to anybody must be the societal norm.

Too bad the only fly in the ointment is that many, many more millions and millions of Americans don't want it. If Prop 8 can't pass the smell test in the land of fruits, nuts, and flakes...how does that equate to an embrace by the unwashed masses that inhabit the vast majority of the USA? But, of course, it must be rammed down their throats for their own good. Right?

Those that live in Bizarro World clearly don't see the world the way it really is. Newt has his work cut out for him.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

I'm sure Gay History Month will be a real crowd pleaser in a lot school districts. Think of the charming class assignments for the kiddies. What sort of visual representations can we expect to represent the month?

very funny. i'm sure something like breast cancer awareness month (also october) would be more appropriate.

i'm all for breast awareness month.

I didn't bring up the idea. Ask SRVT about it. He's the one that said it could come about later.

You brought up and I gave you your shot and all you could come up with stuff about black guys' sex organs as the only thing worthy of study for schoolkids. You could have used famous gays in history at the very least but your fixation on interracial gay porno images seems to leave you with little else to discuss the issue thoughtfully.

Yeah I'm not sure that would really come about. Perhaps he was being sarcastic.

Unless he was referring to the recognition of historical reality much in the same context as the fight for gay civil rights as the past brought about other civil rights movements.

I do not agree that would be necessarily something on the same level of justice- but its certainly a fight that is legitimate, valid, legal, logical, or any other way you want to look at it. Therefore, very much alike the racial civil rights movements of old- that coincidentally show there still is a need for better understanding and tolerance since racism still exists in this country, decades after the initial, tumultuous 60s.

Both of these groups vote overwhelmingly against gay marriage.

The argument is about the definition of the Family Unit in our society, specifically how it applies to marriage, and what's meant by marriage, who is allowed under law to marry, etc.

These laws dictate minimum age, sexes of the participants, and even sometimes other restrictions prohibiting relatives from marrying.

Up till now the dictate is that the couple must be a man and woman, not a man and man, or woman and woman.

The family unit has its roots in English common law and it, as we all know, is derived from Christian beliefs.

The definition of marriage is not something that should be handled by the state, but by the churches.

I'm not religious at all, and I want religion to stay the hell out of the state, but this goes both ways. The state needs to stay out of religion.

If special benefits and privileges weren't given to married couples, then prop 8 wouldn't be an issue.

With exception to a few, I don't think anyone want's to oppress gay people. They just want to protect their beliefs from being transformed through government coercion.

The government should recognize every couple equally. No privileges. No favoritism.

Hey, you're the one overtly worried about sex in history, so I imagine that you'd be worried about black d*cks during Black History Month -- it's a fair comparison. If you're not worried about the "sex" part, there's also the fact that they actually have relationships beyond sex, and there's a history behind their suppression, the latter of which being a focal point in a history class, if you ever went to one. If this is too difficult for you to grasp, let me know. You look like a cartoon character flying all over the screen slipping on banana peels with your slippery slopes.

Marriage licenses are not given by the churches, so they have no say so in marriages for everyone else. Church does not apply here.
