Obese have right to two airline seats

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Obese people have the right to two seats for the price of one on flights within Canada, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled on Thursday.

The high court declined to hear an appeal by Canadian airlines of a decision by the Canadian Transportation Agency that people who are "functionally disabled by obesity" deserve to have two seats for one fare.

The airlines had lost an appeal at the Federal Court of Appeal in May and had sought to launch a fresh appeal at the Supreme Court. The court's decision not to hear a new appeal means the one-person-one-fare policy stands.

The appeal had been launched by Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz and WestJet.

My daughter and I recently flew to the Philippines in October and boy was I in for a wake up call. I havent flown coach since I was 9 and I'm 43 and around 240 lbs. so I can relate to people who have problems with one seat. My problem is my height at 6'3" and the jerks in front of you have no respect or concern and just flop their F****** seat back. I had on several flights to MAKE the attendants have these people let return their seats to the upright position because if I ask its not going to come out in a manner to kindly and why should it because the people in front of me didnt give a rats ### in the first place abouts my knees.

sometimes I take their pillows when they're sleeping and hide them under the seat if they have the seat back. then they wake up looking all around for them and I laugh :P

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

my husband is not obese but just very musclular build from lifting weights meaning he is bigger then a single seat on a plane. should he require 2 seats when he is not obease? of course it would make him alot more comfortable if he got 2.

I'm sure that its a space issue more than a body fat issue... but of course- seats can be reconfigured.

I remember AA going to MRTC back to LRTC. Sucked azz and people fly less with them because of that. And that was before the gas 'crisis' began.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Your husband isn't obese so he have to pay to take two seats. My husband is big too. He barely fit.If I travel with him then he can sit comfortably.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

same for me. you're right about having to pay for the seats because they aren't obese. oh the irony...

on my last flight back from the states an extremely fat woman in a moo moo spent her whole time with her knee in my back on purpose because she was mad that i had my seat reclined. when i complained to the attendant about her behaviour (and her children) she got so mad and went totally crazy, claiming she could not fit in the seat, basically admitting she was obese. i should pay for one seat and be uncomfortable but she should get an extra free seat? wow... that's justice for you. :bonk:

how about she stops eating cheeseburgers?

A human being this size, hmmm, well, this is not about eating too much and gaining some weight.

This is a metaphysical issue:

one that says, "I don't feel safe in this world."

It truly makes me sad to see this state of being.

To think that four of me (if not more) would take up the same physical space as this one person.

Think of the size of their skeleton, the same as any one's...wow...blows my mind.

Do not take my take as insensitivity.

I sympathize with the metaphysical manifestation.

Please get to the root of the problem(s) in your(emotional) life and find joy...and peace...and watch pounds melt away without doing anything.

We all know diets do not work.

This wouldn't be as much of an issue if airlines would stop packing people in like sardines. Yes, I know airfares would increase. But some of the seats are so narrow that even skinny people are uncomfortable in them. First class seats for everyone!

Yeah that is true - whenever I fly its always a battle to secure a portion of the armrests. Then if the person in front puts their seat back - pretty much anyone over 5' 7" gets the seat back pressing on your knees.

I haven't flown a lot, but yes the knees thing is super annoying. I am 5'7" and I have a shorter torso and longer legs, which is a pain when driving a car too, I always put the seat all the way back and I'm not even very tall!! On the flights I have been on(LONG flights), if the person in front of me leaned their seat back, it's an obstacle course getting out of your own seat. You have to twist and shimmy out. Which made me feel bad if I put my seat back, I didn't want to annoy someone the way I was annoyed.

when that happened to me and i was told to put my seat upright the woman who requested it was kindly informed that she had no right to ask me to put my seat upright. i'm surprised you weren't told the same thing...

I was on a 3 hour European flight last year and, as it was early morning, I put my seat back so I could have a snooze. At that point the b!tch behind me started pressing her knees into the back of the seat really hard. She may even have been kicking it at some point. What did I do? Ignored the b!tch. I'm sorry, but if she had just tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to move the seat forwards then I'd have been totally cool with a compromise - maybe part way up, or all the way if she was having issues. But if you start kneeing the back of my seat constantly then you deserve to be cramped.

Stupid cow.

Sometimes I think people don't even know what obese means. People who would be labeled obese you may be very surprised about because they won't look like the image you have in mind. Sure they may look overweight to you, but you can't always assume what obese means in the image way.
