Cassie, i'm sorry that people are like that to you - and I have to shake my head at some of the hateful stuff that has been said in this thread, it's terrible when people are so petty that they feel they have the right to judge people who are overweight.

Sometimes I think people don't even know what obese means. People who would be labeled obese you may be very surprised about because they won't look like the image you have in mind. Sure they may look overweight to you, but you can't always assume what obese means in the image way.

Obese is pretty much having a BMI > 30.

I am obese according to the BMI but I fit fine in an airplane seat.. I don't hang over the sides or anything

I know I am overweight... but I don't feel like I am obese..

Even if classified as obese, there's stage 1 obesity, which is the easiest to get out of to just 'regular' overweight (BMI between 27 and 30 I believe).

A well done BMI measurement takes into account % body fat. Its not just body weight and height. And I doubt airlines are going to have nutritionists available to caliper people's fat zones (arms and bellies) to get % Body Fat. But that would be hilarious and for those that are simply obese out of lifestyle choices... then perhaps it would be a little public humiliation to slim down. Not that I think that's a particularly nice thing to do, but perhaps it would curtail a little overeating.
