Could you do what Anakin Skywalker did?

Okay... I'm sure most of you have seen Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, correct? If you haven't and plan on seeing it, you may want to leave this thread, since they will be spoilers.

In RotS, Anakin Skywalker (later on Darth Vader) was afraid of his wife dying in childbirth, due to a Force vision of the future. He would do anything to protect her and was lured into the Dark Side of the Force by thinking it could save her. In order to gain mastery over the Dark Side, Palpatine ordered Anakin to hunt down and murder every Jedi on Corsucant. As he felt his wife and unborn child were more important than the other Jedi (most of whom he didn't get along with), he followed his new master's orders. He slaughtered the Jedi existing there, even the "younglings" (who were small children) who could barely defend themselves, if at all.

We all know the rest. ;)

So my question to all of you here: would you in real life do something similar, if you believed doing so would "save your spouse and child" from death? Would you kill off hundreds, thousands or even millions of people in order to obtain that goal? Could you, in order to finish the task, murder small children? How far would you go in order to assure the safety of your family?

I thought this question might be interesting, considering we endure the lengthy and often mind-numbing process of immigration to be with our spouses. Somewhere along the process, we sacrifice many things, including money, family, friends, jobs, and a life as we know it in our home countries. We do everything we can to be with our partner. So if saving him or her meant the deaths of others, how would you respond?

I haven't seen the movie, and I read your question.

A question came up at the Freedom Museum here in Chicago:

When should the needs of many infringe on the rights of one?

It's kind of the opposite of your movie's scenario, and yet so similar.

I believe the answer "should" be no.

And then emotions get in the way.

Damn that human drama of ours...

:P

There was some lazy storytelling in that movie - it was hardly the sort of character conflict that would plausibly push the guy over the edge to participate in genocide.

Uncharacteristically, I agree with 6 on this one. I didn't understand how killing "younglings" would insure the birth of healthly Luke. Was the Emperor a doctor? Didn't they have great medical technology with all those spaceships and the mother being royalty so they had the influence?

False choice since I don't think anyone died as a result of our decision to get married.

Well that was another problem - all those future technologies but Padme manages to die in childbirth on a ship with a fully equipped hospital. And Dr. Droid diagnoses "a broken heart"

Its interesting that if you watch the movie again - you see that its actually that character who proposes the motion in the Senate that gives the Emperor unlimited power.

He should be strung up by the ears for that!

I haven't seen the movie either, can't seem to sit through it but the storyline sounds like it came straight out of the Bible. No joke.

I like the old three. The new three irked me - 'specially the first one. I have watched them all - the new ones. The first one - BAH. The second one - hmm...seems someone was trying to fast forward through the life of Anakin Skywalker in a similar way to how one might show a preview of an entire series... Third one - well, it was a bit like the director had been drunk the first two movies, and then had a guilty hangover when he made the third..something like "darnit...those first two should've been better...sorry folks...this one's bit better but I have an enormous hangover, so sorry if it falls down a bit in places..."

I don't think I'm being overly harsh there, do you?
