Thanks for this Rebecca, I have recently arrived in Washington State myself (beautiful), can you tell me what Mark has to do to get his license? Does he have a UK one to convert or is he learning from scratch? I have a UK license but am wondering wether I will have to take a WA state test...

Hiya Scarlett! It depends on the state. As for Gareth here in Michigan all he has to do is give proof of who he is and WHAM they give him a 30 day permit to use with me or another licensed driver. At the end of the 30 days he gets his real license. And this is with NO international license even! He has never driven bar a couple times when he had first started drivers training but then dropped out of it in the UK haha! Pretty scary if you ask me. I told him we would get it for him in the spring!

I live in Michigan also and they needed to see proof of residency, my greencard, at the office I went to. They gave me a temporary license and I had to take the written exam immediately, which was a bit of a surprise, so I had only read through the driving laws once but the test was pretty easy. I then had to arrange for a driving test and then got my permanent license.

Can Mark not drive in the US using his UK drivers lincence for the first year? I thought you could. Good to hear you guys are happy and the wedding went well. Good luck with the AOS

Stuart

I know in Arizona you can use your UK license if you're 'visiting', but once you become a permanent resident then you need to get a US one

And just to add a question to this.... does anyone know if in Arizona I'd have to 'redo' my test, or whether I can just get my license magically transferred into a US version?

Looks like you'll probably have to take a road test:

"Testing

You may be given a simple vision exam. Written and road tests may not be required if you provide a valid driver license in another state."
