Hello, :innocent:

I will be entering Minneapolis as POE with my fiancee on April 2nd and I want to know when is the best time to apply for her social security card? Is there any advantage to applying prior to our marriage which will take place June 27th?

We will file for AOS, EAP & AP on June 29th so I thought it would be just as easy to wait until submitting the marriage certificate in with her application for a new social security card.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Jeff & In-In :whistle::innocent:

Apply for SSN 2 weeks after POE, your fiancee's data should be encoded into the USCIS data base by then. It will be hard to apply for SSN when your fiancee reach the 2-week period before the I94 expiry (after 76 days stay in the US). I know a friend who applied for SSN after marriage and it fell within 2 weeks before I-94 expires, she was asked to apply for SSN after she gets her green card.

I arrived in the US last week (November 17) and applied for my SSN today (November 25). It was very easy, but the officer said since I had only been here less than 10 days, they hadn't had my info from USCIS in their database so couldn't tell if my application was granted or not. She gave me a letter saying that they needed to verify my documents and if everything went well then they would mail me my SS Card in four weeks. She said there should be no problem though.

So I suggest you apply for your SSN at least 10 days after your arrival, and long before your I-94 expires.

Hope this helps.

but you will still need to go back to SSA after greencard.... so you can go after about two weeks and then handle the name change and immigration status update after greencard or you can wait until after marriage and get the SSN in the married name and then go back after greencard... you pick your poison....

FWIW, St. Paul SSA office knows how to handle K-1's before marriage....

YMMV

I waited until a month after I was married. Had no problems. Had the card in hand 8 days later. Depends on the office and the staff you are dealing with on how much of a pain it will be.
