What ticks me off is that when you call to order it then they try to sell you like 300 other things you don't want and you can't get them off the phone.

I mean what the heck am I going to do with 4 American flag lapels, a year's supply of super glue, and 4 cases of oxyclean now?

I have 2 pet rocks and a Chia pet with Obama stickers, and a piece of toast with a burn that looks like his profile on them. Make an offer.

LS, I don't think the people who collect these things are thinking of them as investments; that would be silly. I don't see the difference between collecting commemorative coins and collecting any other kind of collector items.

people buy these. i don't think they are legal tender though, being that they've been covered in gold.

Yeah, I don't get it. People collect all kinds of things. Me, I collect human heads.

i know it's lame but as i'm the non-usc so i was interested by the state quarters and collected most of them during my visits to the states. i'm still missing one for alaska and both of hawaii.

I collected them for a while, then grew bored. Mags, however, has been grabbing my change - sometimes right out of my pockets - and rabidly searching through the coins looking for quarters we don't have. I reckon the dollar coins are next. And the nickels. lol

wow, well i'm glad i'm not alone! maybe it's a girl thing because my other half got tired of collecting them after a while too.

it was fun for me to learn all the different symbols from the different states but now it has planted a seed and i want to collect more. not sure which ones i would do next. i've got a couple of dollar coins already. maybe we should have a competition. got any two dollar bills?

I've been collecting the State quarters from the beginning; I have several of each, plus I've got the collector's panels which have an uncirculated quarter from each mint, plus an explanation of the design and a history of the state. I've also been collecting the Presidential Dollar coins. I'll pass on the First Lady set, since those are out of my budget...

I would like to know too....I think the colorized coin depicting Obama with Kennedy in the background is presumptuous. The freaking guy hasn't even been inaugurated yet.

But I can see at least one connection.

Obama may push us to the brink of nuclear war due to his overwhelming inexperience as Kennedy did through his inexperience.

I don't see Kennedy in that coin....Just Obama and Biden

Obama Coins Made From Presidential Dollars

One of the most heavily marketed types of Obama coins are the Obama Inaugural Dollars. The ads for these coins have slick TV and Web videos showing emotion-laden footage of Obama walking among crowds of ordinary Americans, and speaking to flag-waving crowds. One ad claims that you can "own a piece of American History" and then goes to incorrectly identify a normal, circulating Presidential Dollar as a "Presidential Inaugural Dollar." These Obama coins are being sold for prices ranging from $14.90 to nearly $30 each, and all they really are is defaced Presidential Dollars that you can get for $1 at the bank!

Most of the Obama coins which use a Presidential Dollar for the host coin are colorized through the application of a decal, which is permanently fused to the coin's surface using a hot glue process. In doing so, these marketers are wiping out the faces of our nation's Founding Fathers and placing their garish colorized designs on our U.S. legal tender coinage. The result is a coin that is numismatically worthless; in other words, these colorized Obama coins will never have any value to coin collectors as collectible Presidential Dollars because the original surfaces of the coins have been destroyed by the colorization process.

Official Obama Coins

Not all of the Obama coins floating around are unofficial, nor are they all just colorized U.S. pocket change. Prior to the election, according to the Birmingham Post, the Democratic Party placed an order with the Winston Elizabeth & Windsor mint in England for about £100,000 ($156,000) worth of silver Obama coins to be used as gifts for Party supporters. (Why the Democratic Party is buying from companies in England, rather than the USA is an issue beyond the scope of this article.) The silver Obama coins, which were made from specially-designed dies, were issued in a numbered limited edition of 300 coins. If you were lucky enough to have received one of these official Obama coins, you just might have a collectible with some potential to increase in value over the years!
