MADE IN USA PRODUCT

I was having a talk with a colleague a couple of days ago, and the subject was about Made in USA product.

While I was at the Great Mall, I saw this T-shirt with a "MADE IN USA LOGO"

When I checked the tag, it said" MADE IN SALVADOR with USA material.

I drive a Toyota Camry, it was built in Columbus Ohio

His GM car was made in Mexico.

The question got to the argument, which one of these 2 cars are AMERICAN.

His say. You have to look at where the profit is going, with the GM cars the money will go to the shareholders, which is global.

With the TOYOTA camry the profit will also go to the shareholders but THOUSANDS of families out here are making a living earning Decent living wages from TOYOTA

SO which one of these 2 cars is AMERICAN?

Gone but not Forgotten!

GM is American. Toyota is Japanese.

GM profits pay the salaries of American CEOs and the pensions and healthcare costs for thousands of retired GM workers.

On average, GM pays $70-80 an hour in wages and benefits to US workers (the number includes pension and retiree medical costs.)

Toyota's total hourly labor costs, with benefits, are about $35 an hour -- less than half of GM's rates.

Which car is more "American"? You decide.

F#ck Toyota.

The Toyota.

Whatever you do don't buy a car made in Canada. Everything is sticky from maple syrup.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I'm waiting for a bi-polar bear. :P

As for which car is American, I'd say you have to look at the company itself, not where it's made. General Motors is an American company while Toyota is Japanese. Even if Toyota has factories in the U.S. (which it obviously does), that does not make the car itself American. Perhaps the employees working there are American, but the parent company is still Japanese. The same holds true for GM and how some of their cars are made in Mexico.

Look at it this way: Pfizer (the pharmaceutical company) makes many drugs. One of the medications they've developed is called Relpax and is used to treat migraines. Despite the name, Pfizer is an American company. Relpax, however, is manufactured in Ireland. So is it American or Irish? The right answer would be that Relpax is indeed American, but simply produced in Ireland.

It's not about where something is made, but who developed it in the first place. Another country may have it's own version, but the original product belongs to the country of origin.

It's called global economy where the rich in the world can get much richer and the poor much poorer with the people willing to work for far less get the jobs with no consideration for the cost of living in that area.

I will be more than happy to work for a buck a day, just reduce my property taxes to a buck a year. A few years ago, no such thing as global economy, was just the American economy we were concerned about, Started with Nixon and going downhill ever since, I don't even call it economy, just call it giving our country away, so why was I and others defending it?

We've always had global trade, it's just that the free trade advocates thought that tariffs were bad...worked to the advantage of the U.S. producers. The reality is that 'free trade' doesn't really exist as we know it. We now export corn to Mexico from subsidized crops grown here - which essentially put millions of family farmers out of business. By removing tariffs, the argument was the laissez faire line that 'open, unbridled competition benefits all.' But doing so was akin to the NFL eliminating referees and team regulations. We're not seeing true competition in this so-called global economy. We're seeing that the bottom line - cheap labor trumps all other aspects of competition and the cheapest labor comes from the Third World where labor unions are non-existent, let alone safe working conditions, health care. Even Bill Clinton bought into the argument that free trade would eventually bring Third World countries into the 21st Century, but in reality, the true beneficiaries have been the corporations who have open access to cheap labor and lax environmental/work standards.

We cannot turn away from global trade, but we can rebalance our economy to one that is built primarily on domestic production by setting in place trade policies which are fair to all....especially to the worker.
