But why can't they be Quickie Marts, Tasty Freeze, Crispy Creams? Why can't they just be friggin spelled correctly??

*whine*

Because that's boring. It doesn't Katch your I! :P

And if you think about it, we do the same sort of thing nowadays, just a little different. It's the electronic age, so take your product and throw an "e" or an "i" (lower case!) in front of it. If you make buggy whips, now you have iBuggyWhips and BAM!! Welcome to the 21st century!! I think that's how it must have been in the 50's and '60's. A word like "ElectroLux" sounded futuristic. A name like "Krispy Kreme" sounded hip.

Mox, I am saddened that you are trying to defend the defenseless! How pompous!!!!

I thought Electrolux was a Swedish company... Can anyone disabuse me of this odd factoid which is lodged in my brain?

You are right, it is a Swedish company.

Let's not forget "Aluminum"... Of course, changing the proper spelling to how it is pronounced here is perfectly acceptable...

I generally prefer the English (as opposed to American) pronunciation/spelling, but al-you-mini-um drives me up a farging wall. THERE IS NO "I" BEFORE THE "U" PEOPLE!!!!

Okay, I feel better now. Thank you.

In other news - we got rain here last night (yes, that really is news - it was in the local paper and people were b!tching about how there are going to be loads of accidents - I'm like, get a grip  ). Contrary to popular belief, our roof has not been properly fixed so after being woken by a small torrent of water dripping onto my face at 2.30am I am not best pleased. Especially as we spent the next hour pulling out furniture and finding things to catch drips, all the while looking to spot where they might breach next...

:(

So the house is a mess. I can't be bothered to put it all back just for it to happen again, I have a cold and I am feeling miserable because desert people don't know how to build waterproof houses.

:( :(

More news - the cats are finally training to be roach-catchers. We had one in the bathroom last night (first one in a while) and they were both playing with it. Eventually it ran into the heater (as they do) and we left it. A bit later we hear a bit of a scuffle and the cats fighting. Turns out that when we just had Daisy she wasn't too interested in the roaches, but now we have Riley who is interested, she doesn't want him to have something she doesn't. Result? Two cats fighting over who gets the roach.

Two cats enter...one cat leaves!

Yes but I use the merkin spelling now...pompus!!!.

Wow, you're right, I just Wikipedia'd it.

Okay then, how about one of my most favorite terms EVAR...Ford's first automatic transmission was the "Cruise-o-matic." I don't know why, but I just love that name. To me it just evokes the late '50's to '60's.

actually, there IS an 'i' before the 'u'; American spelling has been changed from the original SCIENTIFIC name to 'aluminum', but that's not what it was originally, and is a CHOSEN alteration :P

I just CANNOT make my mind say those weird spellings correctly

'Chick-Fil-A' was 'Chick-Fill-Ahhh' in my mind for the longest time - still is, until I wrestle it over to the accepted pronunciation; the chain 'Buc-E-Beaver' is 'Byoos-ee-Beaver' in my head, and 'Shipley Do-Nuts' is 'Shipley Dooo-nuts'

there are more, of course; they're just the ones that come straight to mind

and mox is not only pompous!!ly defending the defenceless, he is also messing with our THREAD!!

and I'm going to tell mum :P

sorry to hear about weather woes, Aly :(

hope it all settles down soon... things like that can make you so miserable, even though they're not catastrophic on the grand scale :(

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

There's a reason it was changed, because way back when King Arthur was making the new dictionary, he decided "al-you-mini-um" sounded stupid and changed it to reflect the proper American pronunciation. Unfortunately he was assassinated by Guy Fawkes and Jeremy Beadle shortly after the new dictionaries were published, but before the new pronunciation could catch on. It's science.

One of the guys I correspond with fairly frequently has a Russian wife and daughter. The daughter is about 10 or so, and a couple weeks after she'd arrived here they were driving down the street and she started yelling that she just saw a Russian toy store and they had to pull over immediately! So they turned around to try to figure out where this Russian toy store was, and they looked over and saw a sign: Toys Я Us." Heh!

In America it's ok to mix up British names. I mean, it doesn't really matter because it's so far away and anyway we beat Britain in WW2 so it's ok.

Yes but I use the merkin spelling now...pompus!!!.

Surely that should be "pompos due to the American necessity to remove the letter U from everything...?

Its snowing here in Buffalo! Just wanted to share this exciting new with everyone!! We just installed a gas heating stove in our living room, so I get to go home to a nice cozy house now! And we also put in new carpets and curtains. Just a few more elements and I will have one room in our house completely finished! Its so exciting to see it starting to take shape and make it our own. :)
