Isn't Stollen just a fancy name for fruitcake? I hatehatehate fruitcake.

no, not really... it IS a type of fruitcake, yes, but different to any other I've had

I tried a piece of American fruitcake at Central Market, and like you mox, I didn't like it... I don't much like UK fruitcake with those big slabs of 'marzipan' (it's a faint echo of marzipan, in my opinion) either

Stollen is a light, moist, fruity cake-bread; the best sorts have REAL marzipan in the centre, or are soaked in rum, and all of them are heavily dusted with icing sugar (confectioners' sugar for heathens )

my mother makes her own fruitcakes, which are also nummy, and she soaks them comPLETEly in rum

I used to watch her make them, and she'd get them out of the oven a number of times while cooking, to pour more over them... I remember the way it would crackle

she sent us one for Christmas

luckily for you, mox, rum is 'Rum' in German, so when you go looking for a lovely Stollen you'll know which one to buy
