I had a cell phone stolen once.

The one thing that would absolutely devastate me if it was stolen. Besides the kitties.

Yes, I can think of three times:

1. someone broke into our house when I was a kid and stole a LOT of stuff.

2. someone stole my car.

3. someone stole that second car i bought with the payoff from the first car a year later!

hmmph.

I'm thinking you mean that burglary is by force and theft is not?

I voted burglary, theft and vandalism. Burglary and theft were in Italy - both by force and not - 3 times. And then our car was keyed here in the US.

I'd say burglary is when someone enters your home without your permission or knowledge and takes something. Theft is more generic. By force would be robbery.

When we moved into our first apartment, the movers stole my digicam and Lai's windchimes that she got in Germany

I was going to make this a victim of crime poll. But that opened a whole can of worms about physical violence, spousal battery etc. I decided to keep it to property crime. I was thinking that burglary is just how Scott described, when someone enters your home without permission.

However your point is duly noted. I'll use the definitions from wikipedia for clarity.

Here in Louisiana we've had a few little things happen since I've been here.

Someone went through the car one night- I got in the car one morning and the glove box was open and stuff was all over the seat. Nothing was actually taken except for maybe a Swiss Army knife that Mel said he had in there and can't find now. Happened to a few of our neighbors as well.

And this is silly- Mel had 2 matching potted plants on the front doorstep. One of them is gone.

When i was building my house, neighbor kids decided it would be fun to break numerous windows. They also smashed the glass to the electric and gas meters, as well as taking some building materials.

We caught them one night, took them to the police dept, parents showed up ect, thought ok we'll be nice and not press charges, WRONG MOVE! The next night they came back and did more damage.

Thankfully after that they didnt do anymore stuff.
