I know you asked Rahma, but I'll give you a couple of tips for beginning hijabi's... easiest by FAR is the one piece Amira Hijab http://www.starscarves.com/al8000.html it's made of stretchy t-shirt like fabric and just slips over your head an voila you're done... (this site even has ones with embroidery - hard to find in the one piece version...)

The 2nd easiest is the 2 piece Amira hijab http://www.starscarves.com/amirahijab.html there's a BUNCH of them on this site... in alot more colors and patterns than the one piece Amira's...

And then if you want to look more "vogue" and aren't that good with pins, try the Shayla Kuwaitia or "Mona" hijab which looks like the wrap style so popular all over the Muslim world, but so hard to do for beginners.. unless you have this version that has a built in underscarf. http://www.starscarves.com/monahijab.html

What style of hijab you wear and how you wear it is very much dependent on where you are from... the triangle style are so popular in the Fertile Crescent area (Jordan, Syria, Palestine). But when I wear them I get a bad case of "cobra head"... with the sides flaring out and making me look down right WEIRD...

The Amira's are so comfortable but hardly "vogue"... however when I wear them in Egypt even stylish ladies ask me where I got mine... so they must have some appeal... ;)

Easiest oblong scarves for wrapping are those with lycra in them. The stretchy fabric helps bind it to your head and stay in place. And don't forget an underscarf or "skull cap" if you don't have kinky hair they are a necessity to keep your scarf from sliding off...

Good luck and happy wrapping!

K

But the burqa-wearing ladies of Afghanistan that is oppressive.

I hear a lot of people saying this. Why? No really, I'm curious.

Because Taliban is no longer there. Some women stopped covering their hair, but most still wear the burqa, even though there is no law that can force them anymore. Alot of Afghani women wear the cover on their head, similar to the Pakistani style, which their face shows as well as the top part of their hair. Those who wear burqa, I think they wear it by choice.

I'm referring to the chadri burqa where it covers the face...I do know that many Afghani women still wear it because of warlord control in their areas, not because they choose to. For those that choose to, hey to each their own, but when told what to wear, as they were for so long, that is oppresive.

On youtube, there are a bunch of videos showing how to put on different types of hijab. Specifically how to put on an al amirah (the two piece one you have I believe), check this out.

For the longest time, I only work my hijab like this, because it's the only thing I knew how to do:

howTowear_Hijab01_big10.jpg

When I went to egypt, my SIL physically showed me how to do it and wrapped different styles, which gave me some skills, so now I can do different styles on my own. I still actually wear it like that most of the time, but today I have on an underscarf and a big rectangle shayla.

If there are some hijabis in your area, ask them to show you. Also, you were suppose to send me your address and your favorite color, cuz I have a present for you

mmmm no.........the taliban are still in the area and very active.......also a lot of the men in the families believe very strongly in wearing the burqa........women in general in that area are afraid of being caught out side the home with out it u cant go years of oppression and be expected to just say its ok i can do with out it

my youngest sil can do those ones that rahma posted lickedy split but when *I* try it all falls down. :(

When I'm at work I wear the two piece amira normally 'cause i'm in such a rush to get out the door, drop kids off at school, etc. that doing my hijab up is not in my schedule. When hubby and I go out, however, I use an underscarf that color coordinates with a longer scarf. I like the rectangular ones but LOVE the silk square ones that I've accumulated.

Amira two piece though is the best way, imho, to go if you don't know how to do it yet. No fuss whatsoever at all and you don't have to keep adjusting it throughout the day or worry that it will come apart. Also I love how it hides that double chin! lol

I wear my hijab 2 different ways: simple and professional when I am going to work and sassy when I go to the club hang out with friends (usually tied back in a bun)

I also like to experiment tying them like we do in Ghana but the scarves I have are too flimsy for that.
