MOGADISHU, Somalia – A radical Islamic group in Somalia said Friday it will fight the pirates holding a Saudi supertanker loaded with $100 million worth of crude oil.

Abdelghafar Musa, a fighter with al-Shabab who claims to speak on behalf of all Islamic fighters in the Horn of Africa nation, said ships belonging to Muslim countries should not be seized.

"We are really sorry to hear that the Saudi ship has been held in Somalia. We will fight them (the pirates)," Musa told AP Television News.

How does one sink a supertanker without fouling up your own beaches? Won't they have to take out far off shore? Won't their returning ship be an easy target?

that won't enter into their mind when they try to take it back - unsuccessfully.

Not as easy to sink a tanker as you might think.

"Oil tankers are not very vulnerable to damage. 61 percent of the ships attacked during the Tanker War were oil tankers. In total, only 55 of the 239 petroleum tankers (23 percent) were completely sunk or declared CTL, compared to 39 percent of bulk carriers and 34 percent of freighters."

Apparently, you have not read Frederick Forsyth's The Devil's Alternative, in which hijacking of a 1,000,000-tonne oil tanker is one of the main themes.

i didn't state it would be sunk by the firefight that is sure to ensue. the ones in possession of it may well sink it to prevent it from being taken - kind of an in your face you lost move.

I'm not arguing a tanker can't be seized because it's already happened but I more interested to see if they can carrying out their threat to sink the ship and lose the ransom. My guess is the ransom will be paid but not $10 million dollars.

Timed explosives along the keel-line of the tanker can cause its collapse/destruction (as described in the novel).

Also, the question of the pirates being environmentally-conscious--probably just enough to use it for blackmail.

it sadly looks that way.

do you think they have a chance against these pirates? these warlords seem to be rife in somalia due to the lack of government.
