I was a long-term smoker but know those cancer sticks are highly addictive. I found it easy to quit (after many false starts) when I finally settled on quitting forever. It was a question of whether my health and family are more important to me than a pack of cigarettes.

I don't see how people can't stop a voluntary behavior if they really wanted to. I also don't mind smokers doing own thing outside or in say a bar. That was me at one time so I don't become critical.

My one belief that may piss off smokers is that how can you smoke if you have a spouse and/or kids? To me, you're telling them the tobacco is more important than they are and I didn't want my family to think of me for being a bigger idiot for contributing to my own demise at their expense.

Last bit for the obligatory anti-smoking sermon- If you choose to quit, try running because you'll hate the way smoking affects your lungs when they really need oxygen and I found I wanted to smoke less because the taste of cigarettes turned me off while gasping for air.

because we cant all be as strong as you obviously !

I don't think it's about being strong at all. It's about showing you care more about your kid's health than your own addictions.

I wouldn't have ever married someone (or even engaged to someone) who didn't have these priorities set straight.

No its not, my kids know i love them, as i dont smoke around them. so suck it

and if you think smoking and having kids means i have my priorities messed up, your more ignorant that i thought :)

Just bc you dont smoke or dont like ppl who smoke, dont judge a persons priorities just bc they do. makes you nastier than the tabacoo itsself

The fact that you're this defensive over an obvious statement tells me you've got quite a few problems of your own to address, besides the smoking. It's very easy to judge priorities. If you smoke around your kid, especially inside the house, your priority is your addiction, not your kid's health, unless your suggestion is smoking around the kid is good for their health. There's no reason to be defensive unless this is something you do and feel bad/insecure for it. Or you can say stupid ####### like "suck it" and try to blame others for your problems.

Any of the other smokers tend to have mostly friends (and partners) who smoke as well? I wonder which came first, the chicken or the egg.

I tend to think most start socially.

Unlike drinking and pot smoking, cigarette smoking tends to change around to simply something you do at any time. Whereas drinking and pot smoking tend to stay mostly social.

I got invited in here (even though I'm a non-smoker) and so here is my take:

All things that we get addicted to,

whether ciggies, pipes, pot, licorice, baconators, quarter pounders, sex, drama, TV, professional sports, running marathons, name it...

is something that we start and do because we are getting something out of it,

and as time goes on, the activity or feeling gets hard-wired into our brain's synapses,

and the mere idea of quitting it feels impossible and not even remotely desirable.

And so...

To break a pattern, be it whatever, even dysfunctional relationships (with lovers, parents, friends, work-mates, bosses whatever), it takes a concerted and highly conscious effort.

Who will bother?

It can be work!

Bleh.

Hahaha.

And it also can be as simple as you wake up one morning and it dawns on you on a deep level that you no longer need to do or be...insert thingie here.

Life is rebooted in way that makes you laugh at yourself for having waited so long to make a change.

Perhaps none of you here desire to quit smoking or burgering (hee hee) and that is solely your choice.

No judgment.

Perhaps I will drink more water, as each year I tell myself that is my resolution. :P

Perhaps I will eat better, more often, too.

Perhaps I will get back to being more physically active, as my mostly sedentary life now is killing my spirit. :P

Perhaps I will learn to type using all fingers. (I hen peck...hahaha.)

Perhaps you will all laugh at my earnestness, and that is okay.

I just care...somewhat.

I love you anyways.

Ha.

So there.

How about this? When someone else pays my rent, cleans my house and drives me around the city; they get a say whether I smoke or not. Otherwise, I cordially invite them to grab their kids and themselves and indeed, move away - specially if you drink alcohol, overeat, or have a disgusting body odor .

But what about Dear Joyce and her G&Ts? :(

Dear Joyce is of course always a must have guest in this thread! She is the IT girl!

I know many of my closest friendships started on some sort of a smoke break - whether at school or work. I think it's interesting to think about generalizations of smokers' personalities vs. nonsmokers. I usually find myself to have a lot more in common with other smokers than with other nonsmokers (besides the smoking itself of course). Also, smokers are better tippers. :)

how is my statement "suck it" blaming others for anything. maybe your the one guilty of something. a smoker too ashamed to admit it?

im defensive bc im sick of the judging #######. if you dont smoke, then why come on here and and judge and demener others who do? you dont know me, or anyone else on here, so stating smokers put cigs before kids is offensive and insulting. Your first sentence was your opinion, your second sentence was a cry to argument. thats pathetic

I had my first puff at 5 years old.

Started full time at about 16 - mostly cause my friends did too, so yes I'm inclined to agree with that.

We tip better because we sit at the table longer.

Sure  Tell that to those who have been killed by a drunk driver. Or to the ones in jail for driving stoned. And I have never heard of someone arrested for driving while smoking.

And you cannot smoke anytime --- most workplaces are non-smoking, and so are restaurants and malls, etc.

I understand your points, but really. Think this through.

Geez--given some of the anti-smoking posts, you'd think people were advocating blowing smoke at a kid on a nebulizer.

I can say with some confidence that if, God forbid, I was diagnosed with a terminal illness (presumably one not involving the lungs), my first stop would be the tobacco shop.
