Selling my car...need advice!

Heya guys! Another post from the Magpie...

Now, to get me some extra cash, I'm wanting to sell my 2006 Volkswagen Polo GTI. It's worth about £15,500 and I've only clocked about 11,000(ish) miles on it. It's in excellent condition -- no nicks or scratches (there's a tiny one on the back, but it's not very noticeable and can be painted over), recently got new high-performance tyres (Pirelli) worth £500 (I didn't have to pay for it, luckily). It's got a lovely little turbo on it, 1,8 litre engine, six-CD changer, heated front seats and rear parking sensors. It's been a joy having it, but I really want to sell it for its worth.

I was thinking of putting it up on Autotrader, and I'm only waiting for the registration papers to get back to me that give my change of address. I'm also hoping that, if there's something available, I can get a smaller car like a 2006 Toyota Aygo or Volkswagen Fox until I graduate.

Also, Knight's bro suggested that I start selling at a price of £13,500 and only go as low as £11,000. I'll try and get a photo soon, but it still looks brand-new (I've taken care of it!).

Any advice on this would be more than welcome!

Thankums,

Magpie.

I couldn't resist lol.

Have a search on Autotrader and see what similar cars are going for then adjust the price to reflect the mileage. You could probably ask slightly more because of that. Bare in mind that traders prices will be slightly higher. Also take tons and tons of pictures to post and make sure you have a really good ad considering the car you are selling. I'd like a car like yours but couldn't afford it! Am stuck with my Clio for the time being.

Btw autotrader is a great place to sell, I couldn't sell mine for a month but as soon as it went on Autotrader it sold within two days.

It's worth how much!!???

Maybe when it was new, Mags, but not now. With average mileage for its age (24,000) you'd be looking at £9,500 on a private sale. Adjusted for the lower mileage, I'm getting anywhere between £10,000 and £10,500. Given the state of the economy, I'd consider myself lucky to get that, tbf. And you certainly won't get £11,000. Dunno who told you it's currently worth £15k, but they're having a laugh.

Thanks for the responses, lads.

I'm an utter noob at this, and most online car quoting websites are telling me between £6,994-£8,414. I think I'll start at £10,500 in that case, and I'll stop at £9,500. I will have a lookie at Autotrader and see if I can do better than similar cars. By the way, the £15K worth was what it costs to buy one brand-new.

See, if I can sell it, then that will cover my university board, food expenses, phone, etc. -- it's a shame that I wouldn't be able to get a smaller car instead. I think the petrol's going to eat up my wallet way too much. Luckily, as I'm around Egham/Virgina Water/Sunningdale, people shouldn't be too strapped for money.

I'll see how it goes -- still waiting on registration documents, :: ulp ::.

Nick has two cars listed on AutoTrader and so far nothing. People aren't buying as freely now so get started asap so you're not stuck leaving the UK with an unsold car. He brought his Vonage UK box, so has a UK number that now rings here. We get lots of calls from people who see the ad, then call to try to get him to list it with them. That's annoying, especially since they call when we're still asleep.

He bought an old car to make do because he thought the good car was sold months before then the guy backed out. So now he's got two to sell. Maybe you can buy his Nissan to get by with. Not too cool, but it's transportation, it's cheap, it runs well, has a full service history, and cheap to insure. Make an offer somebody...please. Is there a begging icon here?? LOL

Waaah, Nich, good luck with selling those cars. Oddly enough, I've seen jillions of '08 cars in this area...

Well, thing is, I'm selling the car more so that I'm not completely high and dry when I move out. That's the scary part -- I'll have no support whatsoever from anybody but Knight. I don't know my national insurance number, so until I can find out what that is, I won't be able to get a student loan, either. I don't want to put my car on the market either until I have my registration, in case someone does decide to back out.

Arrgh. There ought to be a head exploding icon, too...

Considering the economy at the moment :( I probably wouldn't get your hopes up too high for selling at 11k no matter how low the mileage or how good nick it is in. That's the harsh thing about this crisis  Alot of car dealerships have plummeted on sales for new cars and I've looked into what they are worth for the motor you have (£9000-9500). Your estimation to accept no less than 9500 is realistic but even still, times may get even more desperate just depends on where you draw the line. I hope you sell it fast but at a decent price!! It's one less headache to deal with. I sold my toyota celica but under desperate measures as it took a while.. I miss my baby!!!

I took good car of my baby, she was so much fun to drive...sadly though, she's gonna eat up all my money over petrol. I think I'll be optimistic and try at £12K to begin with, and that failing, I'll drop it. Finding a job at the moment is going to be hectic, on top of my third year work...waaaaaah. You guys have all been WONDERFUl help, so you have my utmost thanks...and cookies.

You might be lucky being that it's a small car. They seem to retain their value over larger ones even in the climate at the moment and they are more popular. But having a large engine for a small car might be a disadvantage. Good luck though.

Well, I'm hoping there's some racer dude out there who's had to give up his nice sporty car in favour of something smaller...or something along those lines. I know it's MPG is pretty good, especially since it can take super unleaded or regular. =P Man, I need to stop blathering and just wait and see what happens. Keep praying for me, guys! Or fingers crossed, either way. The big move's on Wednesday, so it's gonna be pretty scary...

Thanks Monkey =D.

By the way, guys, don't try webuyanycar.com. They're incredibly rude when it comes to haggling, so Autotrader or a VW dealer seems my best bet. :: ulp ::
