Hello everyone and thanks for stopping by.

Well, I don`t know if it is only that political where I live or in other places too but my bank (Bank of America) refuses to notarize my signature on the russian document I need for the embassy to apply for a new passport... They say they won`t do it because they don`t understand the language. Fair enough. Why then they did it in FL??? (I had a similar case there).

So, what should I do now??? I do live close to the embassy but next appointment available is when my passport is going to be expired. And they have to have to have request letter notarized to do it over the mail.

Please help!

Do you live near a Russian community? There are lots of places you can get documents notarized, and if you live near a Russian community then there's bound to be a notary who speaks Russian that can help you. You can also try any FedEx/Kinkos or UPS Store, you might get them to notarize even without understanding the language. Call around, and look in the phone book (under "public notaries" or "notaries" probably, but I don't have a phone book handy.) You might also want to try the Russian consulate, and see if they have anyone they can recommend.

Thanx mox!

Fedex and UPS store tell me the same story my bank does... I was trying to search for Russian speaking notary public online but no results so far, will try yellow pages tomorrow. I just recently moved here and don`t know where russian community is here...

Give the consulate a call too, they might be able to suggest somebody.

I notarized my signature in the bank with no problem.

Bank of America is known to be difficult.

Tell them that they are just notarizing your signature, not your affirmation or anything.

Do you have a notary at work who can do it? Or try a translation agency, they usually have notaries.

I would notarize your signature myself (as I am Russian and I am a notary) but you live way too far from me.

Go to a different Notary Public (be that in another bank or elsewhere). The one you chose is not, shall we say, up to snuff..

Thanks to everyone for replies! I have visited a few public notaries and they all say the same thing that since they can`t understand what is written in a document they are not going to notarize it. So silly. I think it is just of the area I live in... NoVA is very political, therefore it is a lot of caution around. Anyway, Ihave found a russian speaking notary so things are slowly moving. We had the same problem. Giving a notary signature for something in a languae you cannot read is probably like illegal and could result in losing the license. We did find a Russian Notary here. Glad to see you've found one. In the Nation's Capitol I'd think this would be a slam-dunk!
