Bank of New York Mellon Corp. said late Thursday it is cutting 1,800 jobs, or about 4% of its worldwide workforce. "It has become clear that we need to take additional steps beyond our merger synergies to reduce expenses, given the current weakness in the global economy," said Robert Kelly, Bank of New York Mellon chairman and chief executive, in a statement.

Even in bad times, some skillsets are always in demand.

Just because 4% don't have work doesn't mean life sucks for the other 96%.

Truer words never spoken.

LOL....which I take to mean that ...look on the bright side of it ...96% still retained their jobs.

There's that. Then there's the fact that some of those 96% will actually be better off as a result of the reorg. The downside, of course, is that another part of that 96% will be worse off.

We had layoffs a few weeks ago. More are coming. My project queue just keeps getting longer. 2009 is beginning to look hectic.

Congress needs to pass through a stimulus package before Christmas, IMO. Every tax paying American should receive a check before Christmas.

Giving an unemployed dude a thousand (or two) bucks only pushes back the inevitable by a month (or two).

Give him a job instead. Public works!

I work for a transfer agent as well....we are a pretty large global company, we are the agent for a lot of big companies world wide, and we have had layoffs as well. There has been consoidation of jobs as well, and a much heavier work load.

Obama doesn't get sworn in until Jan. 20th....so don't expect any comprehensive measure until after then. In the meantime, we need to put a bandaid on to stop some of the bleeding...even if it only gives temporary relief.
