Start by applying for a credit card. I like Merrill Lynch. They gave me a $1,000 credit line when I had zero previous credit history (I applied to a Merrill Lynch representative over the phone). 7 months later I asked for a credit line increase over the internet. The automated computer denied me. I waited another 2 months, made sure the card was paid in full, and again requested a credit line increase, but this time over the phone to a ML representative. I was approved to a $1,500 credit limit. Here is the website for your references, if you do apply, be sure to do so over the phone: https://www.card.ml.com/MLRewardsCenter/

So getting a credit card is one way to increase your credit score. Another is to get a car, but you will probably need a cosigner to qualify. However, I recommend getting a used car instead of leasing a new one, you will save some money. Getting an apartment will also do the trick but you may need a cosigner.

Just be careful on the credit card. It is a blessing and a curse. Very easy to max out and very difficult to pay off.

You can also try to get the Capital One credit card they have for people who need to establish credit or want to improve their credit scores. That's how my husband got his started.
