How to combat boredom?

One of the common thread I can read in the forum is that once the fiancee arrives in the US, it's a struggle for him/her not get bored in these first few months before receiving the EAP when the US fiance is working.

So I am starting this thread to find out what your fiance/e did to keep busy during the week.

A few ideas:

- take ESL classes (if your English is spotty)

- play sports (and make friends at the same time)

- attend local events from organizations from the country of origin of the fiance

- do some non-profit unpaid work (teach language classes, coach soccer,...)

My wife spent a lot of time shopping for and decorating the house, exploring the neighborhood and immediate area, studying for drivers license, making friends in the local community from her home country, including attending events at their consulate, experimenting with recipes, and planning our weekends lol....it seems she had a new adventure for us to try each weekend. She was still bored at times though- but driving school and a license opened up a whole new world to explore.

*found the closest library, gas station, post office, etc

*tried out a couple of different grocery chains to see which one I liked the best

*started to learn my way around town

*volunteered at my church

*I moved to the US the first of November, so I concentrated on the wedding, then sending thank you notes, preparing for Thanksgiving, preapring for Christmas

*begin the process of making the house more "ours"

*started working on AOS paperwork

Well, I went through this situation couple of years ago when I moved to CA first time and what really helped me out was to join a daily yoga class. I thought I could experience something I have never done before, and it was the greatest thing to me in CA. I made so many friends and basically all of my life , later on, was surrounded by this "yoga" environment.

Even being fond of sports, dance , and having health way of life since I know myself, the bottom line, is to engage in different project as much as possible, and be happy exploring a new life.

Rent 99cent DVDs from Blockbuster. I watched entire seasons of Dexter, Deadwood and 30 Rock during my first month here. Now that I'm working I miss those lazy days

I will shortly be in this situation..so I think I'll be doing some volunteer work to get out of the house, and also some research on jobs and recruiters and brushing up my resume so the minute I get the card I'm ready to start job hunting. Also visiting the local library, going for a run (should be fun in New England in Jan!) and probably baking.... I might even take on more house-wife duties as the man will be working. At least it will free up our weekends!

And of course, obsessively check on my case status and VJ!

I had to take exams to work in my profession here, so studying took up a lot of time. I also prepared to set up a handmade jewelry business, which was fun and made me feel useful. Volunteering is a great idea. I couldn't stand to not feel like I was doing something useful for such an extended length of time!

I got involved in our church and redesigned their website. I'm now mentoring a recent high-school grad to help prepare her for college. Plus, I've been doing some online study courses - partly just for fun and partly to improve my resume. New hobbies (or a continuation of old ones) are another boredom-combatter! I really haven't been bored, though. I'm pretty good at making the most of where I'm at.

I plan to do some Spanish language classes

Take up Yoga or some sort of sport

And do some work experience somewhere if I can get my hands on it.

Other then that, I will have plently to do with planning a wedding, cleaning a house and learning to cook properly (things I wish to do).

Plus my mum is going to come over with me for the first 2 or 3 weeks so i will be able to show her around

I spent a bunch of time on facebook, played videogames, volunteered, worked on my own business (logistics, not making money ) and looked online for random things to do
