anyone move to Texas? I am thinking I am going to have to do the drivers test

and yes - I HATE parallel parking

Got a valid Canadian driver's license? If so, there is no road test and no exam test. It is worth it to read the driver's book in Texas anyways though.

$24 for 6 or 7 years. Not bad.

You'll need to have your vehicles inspected, registered, and insured with Texas insurance first though. You get your driver's license last.

In North Dakota when I lived there and had to surrender my Canadian drivers licence I only had to do a vision test, the licence was only valid for the length of my EAD. I registered my vechile under AAA and didn't have my ND licence yet, at first she was going to not issue the insurance policy, but she then let me come back a day or two later with the ND licence. I hope I don't run into that problem when I move to NE, but hopefully by the time I go to get my car registered and insured (30 days max) i will have had my road test! I am so nervous for that day!

Indiana requires that you do everything all over again as a foreigner. You will have to go through the Learner's Permit process, wait 3028302 years for them to verify all of your USCIS information with Annapolis, and then take road, written, and vision tests. It took my husband from November to June to get a friggin driver's license.

I have a question as well.

I drove my then girlfriend to FL from Ontario in April 2007.

We were in love, got married and have a very happy lifestyle.

It ended up putting me into 'overstay' status. So I am AOS from my overstay and not a visa, so NO travelling outside of the country or I face the 10 year ban.

My question is; Can I order a SSN now? So that I can get my DL as soon as the NOA comes in?

Or do I wait during this process for a SSN? I thought this was the way to go, but after reading some people's stories I have become a bit unclear on this situation.

Ok one more question. Since my Canadian License expired, even though FL only requires canadians to take the eye exam, does this mean I have to start from the beginning in FL and take the written, and road test?

Sorry this got so long!

Thanks,

Brian

Yep. If you are on AOS, you have to wait for the SSN.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Hi BrianandJenn,

Likewise, I did the "overstay" from the "Vistor" status then to the "AOS/legal resident/green card" status too....

See my "VJ Timeline" for more information.....

I had to wait until I got my green card (about 8 months later) before I got my SSN, as I had no valid status paperwork-wise while my case was pending. On top of that, I had to wait an additional few weeks (about 1-2 months later), to get my SSN. It wasn't until I got both my Green Card and my SSN that I could exchange my Canadian driver's license for a US one, as the DMV would not give me a license unless I had both of those two identifications.

By the way, as soon as I could, I went to the DMV, and I was in and out in 10 mins, as they exchanged my Canadian license for a US one without any problems. I got my US Driver's License two weeks later in the mail after I applied for it.

But yeah, to go 8 months without any valid "legal" status while the green card is pending, and to to go 9 months without a SSN and a US driver's license (well, I did drive really really carefully with my Canadian license in meantime, and didn't get caught) does make one feel really insecure and feeling somewhat "illegal" here...Lol..thank goodness I don't have to worry about that anymore!

Lol..now I have to worry about the I-751, with an expired green card and an extension letter (but that's another story).....

Hope this helps. Good luck with your immigration journey too.
