Hi all,

I know there are a few States that do not require a road test to get a DL from a Canadian license, but I cannot find which ones. We currently live in WA, but my husband will be considering new employment contracts from several states in the New Year and all things being equal, I would prefer a State where I wouldn't have to take a road test to get a DL.

Please let me know if you are in a State where you were able to get a DL without a road test....Thanks a bunch!

Virginia was simple; handed over my Nova Scotia one and that was it. Even kept my motor cycle endorsement.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Oklahoma didn't require me to do a road test, after confirming that my NS DL was still current, and after I had my GC in hand.

Why would you not want a road test? And why would you make that a qualification for what state you move to?

And does this mean that I won't want to be on the roads in that state?

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

IL requires vision test and written test.....at least that was all I had to do to get my DL here.

April 13, 2009 - Welcome to the USA letter rec'd. PRC to be rec'd within 3 weeks.

April 16, 2009 - 2 yr GC rec'd in mail.

March 2, 2011 - Mailed in I-751 to CSC

March 4, 2011 - I-751 delivered to CSC

March 4, 2011 - NOA issued

March 12, 2011 - NOA received

April 14, 2011 - BIO Appt 5/6/11

May 6, 2011 - BIO done in 10 minutes...no re-takes this time :)

June 27, 2011 - Email rec'd "Status - Approved"

July 1, 2011 - 10 yr GC arrived

Only eye test in Mass...

"Converting a License from Canada, Mexico or the US Territories

You may convert a license from one of these countries or territories if you:

* Provide a certified driving record (not more than thirty (30) days old) from the country or territory where you are licensed.

* Take and pass an eye test.

* Take a written test if your license has been expired for more than 1 year but less than 4 years.

* Take a full test - written and road - if your license has been expired for more than 4 years.

Once your license is converted, you will be given a temporary Photo-Imaging license, valid for 30 days. A permanent license will be mailed to you." http://www.mass.gov/rmv/license/9oos.htm

New Jersey- Vision and written test as long as you have a valid Canadian license.

Why would you not want a road test?

I've been driving for 7 years. After going through a graduated licensing program in Ontario where I had been tested 3 times in 5 years, why should I have to be tested again? Re-testing over and over again when you are young comes down to money, as far as I'm concerned.

NC did not require me to do a road test, but their policy is actually "at the discretion of the examiner". Everyone has to do the written and eye test, then I handed over my driver abstract from Ontario with a clean record and he said I didn't need the road test.

However, I would strongly advise you to steer clear of (most if not all) North Carolina. The jobless rate is one of the highest in the country, and its pretty dang depressing.
