I heard ...local Social security office can give SS number at the time of application....is that true/

I am not talking about social security card but just number..........can they give it right away at the time of application particularly for K-1 visa holder?

No, they don't. The reason is because they have to verify the legal status of the applicant with Immigration and that can take a few days to a few weeks.

That ain't going to happen.

They can't tell you the SSN at the time you apply even if SSA doesn't need to do additional verification of your immigration status and can clear the application right away. The info is transmitted to the SSA computer center at it's headquarters and when the computer run is done overnight the number is generated and card printed. Even the people at the SSA office where you apply have no idea what's your SSN until SSN record is established the next day.

As far as waiting 10 days, that is referring to the number of days to wait after entering the U.S. before applying for your SSN. SSA has to verify you immigration status before clearing the application and waiting 10 days allows time for the record of your entry to make it into the immigration data base SSA uses to verify your status. However, you are not required to wait 10 days before applying.
